Star Wars 5 Sith Lords Who Actually Seem Pretty Friendly (& 5 Who Were Especially Cruel)

In the Star Wars Universe as it stands today, the Sith represent the concentrated nexus of the most turbulent emotions including fear, anger, jealousy, and hate. In Star Wars Legends, the material written for the Star Wars franchise prior to Lucasfilm’s acquisition by Disney, passion was included among that collective of feelings, resulting in Sith lords that could be charming, driven, and even capable of love.

Most of the cruelest Sith lords in the Star Wars Universe can be found in both the current canon and Star Wars Legends, but the latter tells of Sith lords with a semblance of courtesy, compassion, and morality. By default Sith lords are rarely friendly, but they’re not above using conviviality to get what they want. Cross them, and their opponents will rue the day. The Sith lords presented here represent the most cordial and the most cruel in a galaxy far, far away.

10 Pretty Friendly: Count Dooku

Star Wars 5 Sith Lords Who Actually Seem Pretty Friendly (& 5 Who Were Especially Cruel)

A gentleman Sith if ever there was one, Count Dooku was capable of callous violence like any apprentice of the dark side, but chose to utilize his gifts as an urbane diplomatic even when dealing with enemies, finding it to be a greater means of disarming them.

Even when he had Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in custody on Geonosis, he appealed to him as a friend, employing charm and civility in the hopes that the Jedi might turn against his Order. Dooku would later think nothing of sentencing Kenobi and his friends to death, but he did so without relishing the endeavor.

9 Especially Cruel: Darth Maul

A deadly duelist who preferred physically aggressive tactics over the toying typical of most Sith in battle, Darth Maul subscribed to a savagely barbaric code that made him a loyal and single-minded warrior. He was also infamously monosyllabic, making him unreadable, hostile, and aloof.

He gutted Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn while his apprentice stood helpless, killed Duchess Satine by a combination of Force choking her and stabbing her with the Darksaber, manipulated Ezra Bridger into gaining a Sith Holocron, and worst of all, helped create the Siege of Mandalore, displacing and killing thousands of Mandalorians.

8 Pretty Friendly: Darth Revan

Though mentioned in the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary, nothing about Darth Revan’s story is canon, but Star Wars Legends paints the picture of a Sith Lord who remained true in part to his former Jedi teachings, a unique Sith among legions of power-hungry warlords thousands of years before the Jedi Order was wiped out by Darth Sidious.

Revan once fought the Mandalorians as a Jedi before abandoning the Order for the Unknown Regions and the Sith way. He worked to establish his own Sith Empire, and took an apprentice for himself named Malak. He created a fleet that included former Republic military personnel, indicating a leader capable of gaining altruistic followers. His apprentice would turn against him, and Revan would confront him in his final days as a Jedi once more.

7 Especially Cruel: Darth Vader

One of the last legendary Sith Lords before they were all but destroyed for good, Darth Vader made an indelible impression on galactic history. Even during the fledgling hours of receiving his title, he marched on the Jedi Temple and slaughtered nearly every one of its occupants, including the younglings.

Led to believe he was also responsible for the death of his pregnant wife, he spent the ensuing decades as a Sith Lord fueled by rage, grief, and loneliness. He thought nothing of killing those who disappointed him, including his peers and subordinates. He channeled his feelings into incredible power in the dark side of the Force, and became the scourge of the Empire, making entire star systems bend the knee to its will.

6 Pretty Friendly: Darth Vectivus

The most oft-touted “nice” Sith Lord isn’t canon, but his complexity comes from Star Wars Legends, where a Sith named Lumiya spoke of a Sith Lord who chose of his own volition not to harm anyone, ending up passing from the mortal realm in the most likely way possible; surrounded by friends and family.

His name was Darth Vectivus, and he was a man who made his wealth from a mining company with operations that became entangled with the dark side inherent to the asteroid it plundered. He became aware of his Force adept abilities, and his power to conjure phantoms led him to the Sith path. He became an apprentice of Darth Millennial, but maintained his code of ethics throughout his Sith teachings.

5 Especially Cruel: Darth Bane

Much of the hallowed history of Darth Bane is found in Star Wars Legends, particularly the novel Darth Bane: Path of Destruction, which shows his utter disregard for life and his merciless displays of savage violence against both Jedi and Sith alike in the days of the Old Republic.

One of the most frenetic duelists next to Darth Maul, Darth Bane preferred to kill everything in sight, employing Dun Möch (mental Force attacks) on individual victims, a Death Field to telepathically kill over a large area, or a Dark Force Wave to waste entire villages. He was not above siphoning the life Force from a family to heal his wounds from battle, either.

4 Pretty Friendly: Darth Caedus

Before there was Ben Solo, the turbulent son of Han Solo in the Disney Sequel Trilogy, there was Jacen Solo, his son and a beloved character in Star Wars Legends. Jacen was lured to the dark side and became Darth Caedus, a brooding megalomaniac who became so corrupted even his uncle Jedi Master Luke Skywalker couldn’t save him.

Jacen made a distinct choice to redeem himself at the end of his young life, when the pull towards his old family was stronger than his devotion to the dark side. Given the choice between staying tethered to the dark side or warning his estranged wife and daughter their lives were in danger, he allowed himself to die so that he could warn them through the Force.

3 Especially Cruel: Vitiate

Star Wars 5 Sith Lords Who Actually Seem Pretty Friendly (& 5 Who Were Especially Cruel)

By far one of the cruelest Sith to ever live, Vitiate was created as an antagonist for the game Star Wars: The Old Republic, in which he was responsible for killing his parents at age ten, and later kickstarting the Mandalore Wars, the Jedi Civil War, and in his quest to remain Emperor of the Sith for all time, the death of thousands of his followers to accumulate their life forces.

If those despicable events weren’t enough, he created the “Galaxy’s Children”, child spies that he used against both the Sith and the Jedi, brainwashed to never know the deceitful things they were programmed to do.

2 Pretty Friendly: Darth Gravid

Star Wars 5 Sith Lords Who Actually Seem Pretty Friendly (& 5 Who Were Especially Cruel)

Darth Gravid was an atypical Sith and character from Star Wars Legends who believed that there were occasions to incorporate the light side of the Force into the dark side, and that compassion, altruism, and trust could become cornerstones of the Sith Order.

Like many Sith however, he went insane in the pursuit of his ideals, and eventually concluded that the only way the Sith would prevail was if the prior teachings of the Sith Path were destroyed, along with all its artifacts and relics. He was eventually killed by his apprentice before he was completely successful, but he inadvertently did a favor for the galaxy by purging a portion of Sith history.

1 Especially Cruel: Darth Sidious

Darth Sidious, later known as Emperor Palpatine, was one of the most formidable Sith Lords the galaxy has ever known. Effectively orchestrating the Galactic Civil War, the downfall of the Republic, the holocaust of the Jedi Order, and the destruction of numerous planets with his super weapons, his mark was left on the galaxy long after his supposed demise.

But Palpatine would not allow himself to die, and cheated death the way Sith are wont to do. He had manipulated the fate of the galaxy his entire life, and so manipulated his own as well, surviving being thrown down a reactor shaft by his pupil only to rise again and nearly conquer the galaxy once more through the Final Order. It took the essence of all the Jedi past and present to extinguish his dark flame once and for all.
