When it comes to something as huge as another Star Wars trilogy, it’s no surprise that dozens of performers are considered for major roles.

Star Wars is undoubtedly one of the most popular movie franchises ever, and its fame is far from over. With spin-offs, television shows, and the newest trilogy, there is endless content for lovers of this universe to binge. Of course, the trilogy was the final addition to the actual main story that everyone knows and loves.
While fans were quickly able to fall in love with Daisy Ridley as Rey or Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, these actors weren’t always going to be the newest additions to the franchises. It’s time to see ‘what could have been’, and look at some of the actors and actresses that almost joined the Star Wars universe.
10 Almost: Miles Teller (Finn)
John Boyega is as perfect a Finn as anyone could have imagined, but a popular name in the industry had his own go at it. Miles Teller, Whiplash and Footloose alum, was in some talks to play Finn.
Later, he actually found himself on a short-list to play the young Han Solo in the new spin-off flick. Apparently though, he’s not much of a Star Wars fan, so it’s probably for the best he didn’t get either role.
9 Almost: Eddie Redmayne (Kylo Ren)
When Eddie Redmayne auditioned for the next big villain of this franchise, he wasn’t super popular yet. He had starred in The Theory of Everything, but that was the extent of his film roster. Apparently, the audition didn’t go well, but he did at least score one.
In any case, it’s nearly impossible to imagine anyone but Adam Driver taking on this role. Plus, Eddie Redmayne went on to star in the newest spin-off series for another huge franchise: Harry Potter. So, he’s doing just fine.
8 Given: Laura Dern (Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo)
If there’s anything Laura Dern can’t do on screen, fans haven’t seen it yet – and they probably never will. This Jurassic Park alum has been slaying the big screen and the small screen for years, and she was more than excited to join this big franchise.
She brilliantly plays Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, and it doesn’t appear that anyone else was even considered. She quite famously (and adorably) kept making pew-pew sounds on set, and that’s all fans should need to know.
7 Almost: Michael B. Jordan (Unknown)
People’s newest Sexiest Man Alive was apparently up for a role in the newest trilogy, although he himself doesn’t really know which it was. He auditioned and read for an unspecified role.
Fans know this man is talented, and he went on to brilliantly play Erik Killmonger in another big franchise (the MCU) for Black Panther. While it simply never was, it’s fun to think that this handsome and talented guy could have been waving around a lightsaber.
6 Almost (& Given): Billie Lourd (Rey & Connix)
Fans might think that they recognize this face from the films, and that’s because Billie Lourd did actually end up with a small role, and played Lieutenant Connix. Lourd is actually Carrie Fisher’s daughter, and it didn’t take much else for J.J. Abrams to approach her for Rey.
While Daisy Ridley ended up being a better fit, Lourd was a wonderful addition to these films. The young actress has gone on to star in Scream Queens and Booksmart.
5 Given: Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata)
Lovers of this series and this actress might actually not have known that Lupita Nyong’o was the voice and movements behind Maz Kanata. She was shipped the secret script by J.J. Abrams, and the rest is truly history. She was signed on almost immediately.
It’s a shame fans don’t get to see her face in the flick, but she still does an incredible portrayal of Maz, regardless how much fans are in debate over the character. There’s nothing to debate about Nyong’o’s talent though.
4 Almost: Darren Criss (Finn)
Everyone who loves television and musicals will likely known Darren Criss’ handsome face from Glee. He had his hat thrown in the ring for the character of Finn, and got himself an audition for the role.
Obviously, he didn’t get lucky enough to get the part, but he was one of the actors that got to give it a shot. This performer has been continuing to dazzle everyone on the small screen, anyways, ever since.
3 Almost: Michael Fassbender (Poe Dameron)
Poe’s character has become one of the most lovable of the new trilogy, but it actually was one of the last to be totally finalized. Because of this, there were some very different names that were in talks to play this part. Michael Fassbender, X-Men and Alien alum, was one of them.
It’s hard to really think about Fassbender in the role, despite his obvious talents. After the character was finalized, it’s pretty obvious why the producers decided that Oscar Isaac was the right fit.
2 Given: Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke)
This is another character that is mostly CGI, but everyone can recognize the talent of Andy Serkis behind this villainous character. He was no newbie to voices hugely popular characters, including Gollum and King Kong.
It was a role that was pretty destined for the talents of this popular actor, and there isn’t much else that needs to be said about why he was immediately cast in this role.
1 Almost: Saoirse Ronan (Rey)
Movie lovers certainly recognize the face of Saoirse Ronan, whether it was from her early fame in The Grand Budapest Hotel or her Oscar-recognized performances for Little Women and Lady Bird. She’s versatile and totally talented, and she actually auditioned for the part of Rey.
Apparently, this quirky and lovable lady really wanted to wield a lightsaber, and fans can’t blame her. While she did score an audition, she obviously didn’t get the part, even though she probably could have slayed it just as well as Daisy Ridley did.
