Star Wars Anthony Daniels Says He Will Never Stop Playing C3PO

Anthony Daniels says he intends to keep playing C-3PO for as long as they’ll let him. The English actor has had the role of the beloved protocol droid since the original Star Wars in 1977, making him the only cast member to appear in all nine movies of the Skywalker saga.

While Daniels is often the man moving C-3PO from inside the suit, its his voice that has made the role iconic, and he’s played the character in numerous other projects besides the theatrical films. In addition to plenty of promotional materials, he’s joined episodes of Sesame Street and The Muppets, lent his voice to animated series, video games, and Disney theme park rides, and even appeared in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978. In fact, the animated sequel The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, which released on Disney+ today, is where you can see him next.

In an interview with CinemaBlend about that latest project, Daniels is asked whether he would ever retire from playing C-3PO. The 74-year-old answers without hesitation:

No, I’m never going to retire, they’re going to have to throw me out the door. … Life is not over. The films, they may be for ‘3PO – certainly taking a backseat for a very, very long time, I would think – but there’s all sorts of other media, particularly now with digital formats, that I am so happy, and grateful, and proud to be a part of. And I do want to go on looking after ‘3PO, because, yeah, he needs looking after. There’s nobody else on this planet, at the moment.

In addition to discussing the new holiday special, Daniels also talks his excitement for Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, a new virtual reality game that releases on Thursday. Based around the Star Wars section at the Disney theme parks, this new game will supposedly introduce fans to a new time period centuries before the prequels known as The High Republic. Calling it both “extraordinary” and “magical,” Daniels expresses deep admiration for the growing technology, which he says will allow fans to connect with C-3PO in new ways. He also mentions having a third project in the pipeline that he wasn’t allowed to give any details about, releasing sometime after the VR game.

Listening to him speak, Daniels’ genuine enthusiasm for his work shines through. After more than four decades, it’s almost impossible to imagine anyone else in the role, and it’s clear the character of C-3PO means as much to him as it does to fans. While he makes it clear that major movie roles are likely off the table for now, his openness to all kinds of new media means that the golden droid will continue to exist in some form as long as the Star Wars bosses will have him.
