Star Wars Awful Ewoks Movies Start Becoming Canon In Battlefront 2

A new update for EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront 2 has brought the game’s playable Ewoks to the forefront – and, with them, an ability that makes part of Star Wars’ terrible Ewok movies canon. The Ewok’s Wistie Pouch ability references an alien species first seen in the poorly received, made-for-TV movie, Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure.

Caravan of Courage and its follow-up, Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, sit with the infamously weird Star Wars Holiday Special among the more shameful creations of pre-Disney Star Wars. Released in 1984, Caravan of Courage follows Mace and Cindel, two children whose family crash-landed on Endor before the events of Return of the Jedi. The children are joined by a group of Ewoks and embark on a mission to save their parents from the giant Gorax alien. The movie suffers from major pacing and storytelling issues, with strange, mystical occurrences going unexplained, only to be followed by particularly boring sections where basic plot details are explained through narration.

Although Disney wiped the Ewok movies and all other Expanded Universe materials from the Star Wars canon in 2012, elements from Caravan of Courage (such as the aforementioned Gorax) began appearing in official material as early as 2015’s Ultimate Star Wars reference book. In April 2018, EA and DICE brought one of Caravan’s stranger elements back into canon for the first time with Battlefront 2’s Ewok Hunt mode. Ewok Hunt’s titular warriors are able to toss Wistie Pouches, unleashing firefly-like creatures that damage and disorient enemies. Though they may seem like mere bugs, the Wisties are actually small, humanoid creatures that resemble fairies, first introduced in Caravan of Courage.

The new Battlefront 2 Age of Rebellion update brought the Ewok Hunter into all modes as one of the Rebels’ Reinforcement classes, meaning players are now seeing more Wisties in the air than ever before. According to DICE, Battlefront 2 Game Design Director Manuel Llanes originally thought the Ewoks could use some kind of ranged, non-lethal powder to damage enemies from a distance, but Lucasfilm suggested the Wisties instead. In Caravan of Courage, a Wistie queen assists the rescue party in distracting the villainous Gorax, making their disorientation-focused ability in Battlefront 2 a fitting one.

EA’s original 2015 Battlefront previously included a reference to Caravan of Courage, with a cave populated by giant spiders and a hanging, wooden cage (similar to the one used by the Gorax to contain Mace and Cindel’s parents), but giant spiders are far from as dramatic an addition as the fairy-like, potentially sentient Wisties. Another non-sentient Ewok movie creature was made canon before Battlefront 2, as The Battle for Endor’s Blurrgs appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2009 – and, later, blurrgs appeared in The Mandalorian – though that was before Disney brought its stricter attitude towards what could be considered canon. Battlefront 2’s Wisties appear to have opened the door for more canonical appearances from intelligent Ewok movie creatures, though, as the Star Wars: Forces of Destiny cartoon featured a Gorax less than a month after the Ewok Hunt update released.
