Star Wars Battlefront 2s Biggest Unfulfilled Promise More Female Heroes

EA and DICE recently launched the last major update for Star Wars: Battlefront 2, ending the game’s new content support without introducing any additional female hero characters – something Battlefront 2 creative director Dennis Brännvall said would “absolutely” happen back in February 2018. Following the update, Battlefront 2 devs expressed disappointment at not being able to add content like The Clone Wars’ Ahsoka Tano to the game, but fans were still saddened by the news that it would really never happen.

Despite its notoriously bad, loot box-filled launch, Battlefront 2 has become a great game. DICE consistently supported it with new maps, heroes, reinforcements, and game modes, leading to a well-rounded simulator of epic Star Wars battles. In particular, 2020’s addition of the sequel and original trilogy eras to the Co-op, Supremacy, and Instant Action modes greatly increased the map and playstyle variety of some of Battlefront 2’s most entertaining battles. On top of the new maps, troops like the Rebellion’s goofy Ewok Hunter and the Resistance’s OP Ovissian Gunner – plus a new weapon for each infantry class for the first time since the game’s launch – kept things from getting stale.

But with the game “completed,” it seems EA decided it was time for the team at DICE to move on. Just as support ended for Battlefield 5 (which saw a much less successful post-launch period), Battlefront fans got the news April’s update would be Battlefront 2’s last. This final update delivered on some of the game’s remaining promises, like bringing back Battlefront 2015’s Scarif map and adding a few new Villain skins, but it also confirmed fans would never get the female heroes they hoped for.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Never Got Its Ahsoka, Padmé, Or Ventress Heroes

On February 6, 2018, Brännvall said on Twitter, “Yes, there will absolutely be more female heroes and troopers in Battlefront.” The “troopers” part of this statement came true with the addition of the Ovissian Gunner and ISB Agent reinforcements, but Rey, Princess Leia, Captain Phasma, and Iden Versio remain the only women in Battlefront 2’s roster of 22 heroes. Even the first game’s Jyn Erso never made it to Battlefront 2, despite Rogue One’s Scarif map being ported over in the last update. Brännvall addressed this oversight in late 2019, saying he was sorry the team “didn’t get to the female heroes part” of its promises and that “saying so many things back then was very risky and I shouldn’t have done that.” According to Brännvall, though he regretted making that promise, he did so because he believed the community “needed to hear it” at a time when Battlefront 2’s future looked bleak.

Characters like Ahsoka Tano and Padmé Amidala are the most obvious omissions, but others like The Clone Wars’ Asajj Ventress and Aurra Sing would have made great additions, as well. Fans aren’t the only ones disappointed by these absences, either. Battlefront 2 hero designer Guillaume Mroz said the fact the team couldn’t add Ahsoka was, to him, the “Saddest part” of the DICE’s end-of-support. In a Discord message to the community (via Reddit user aimoperative), Battlefront 2 community manager F8RGE reminded players, “Nobody wanted more from this game than those working on it,” but “sometimes things don’t work out.” These messages make it clear that, whoever made the decision to end development, it was against at least some developers’ wishes to add fan-requested features such as more female heroes. As Reddit user bboardwell put it, “Hopefully in the next game.”
