It has been more than two years since Star Wars: Battlefront 2 released, and the developers at DICE say that the game is finally complete. This means that the next update for Battlefront 2 will be its last new content drop. Players can expect this content update tomorrow on April 29th, and it will allow players to live out the Battle of Scarif from Rogue One.

When Star Wars: Battlefront 2 first released, the game was underwhelming. The game suffered from predatory monetization with its inclusion of loot boxes, as well as generic gameplay and a poor progression system. Over time though Battlefront 2 evolved from bad to great. This can be entirely attributed to the amount of updates that DICE has implemented since launch. Each update added new game modes and characters, reworked broken aspects, and ensured that Battlefront 2 became a more complete game.

After two years and 25 free content updates, DICE claims that Battlefront 2 is complete with the 26th and final one. In a statement released by EA, Battlefront 2’s Creative Director, Dennis Brännvall, explained that The Battle of Scarif update would be the last of its kind. While there will not be any more content updates, DICE will continue to work on servers and game support from here on out. Brännvall assures players that Battlefront 2 is not being abandoned, but that the team will switch into a support and maintenance role rather than creating regular content.

The Battle of Scarif update will be a fairly large one as well. Players will be able to engage in battle on Hoth, Tatooine, Yavin-4, the Death Star II, and the titular Scarif from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Solo play is also being updated as well, so that players will be able to play any of the cooperative missions with an AI rather than having to find a friend online. One of the most exciting aspects of this update is that players will be given new character appearances as well from Episode IX. These will include Kylo Ren with his reforged mask, Palaptine and his new robes, and even Rey wielding her yellow lightsaber from the end of the film. Players will even be able to complete special challenges to unlock Darth Maul fitted with mechanical legs and a hooded version of Rey.

It is impressive to see just how much DICE was able to improve Battlefront 2 over the last couple of years, the opposite of what they’ve been able to accomplish with Battlefield V (of which they’re also ending support for). The fact that the company was able to take one of the most hated Star Wars games ever released and make it into something worth playing is a notable achievement. It will be upsetting for many fans to hear that Battlefront 2 will no longer be getting regular content updates, but The Battle of Scarif should keep them occupied for quite awhile. Hopefully, players are still enjoying Star Wars: Battlefront 2 for years to come.
