Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #5
In the final issue of Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters, the bounty hunter Imara Vex makes her debut in the comics before the upcoming release of the Star Wars: Hunters video game. While the massive crossover event saw the entire galaxy going to war over the still-carbonized Han Solo after Empire Strikes Back, it’s been revealed that the resurgent Crimson Dawn was using the conflict to further their own goals, led by the Lady Qi’ra. Furthermore, Qi’ra has assembled a collection of impressive warriors and agents to join her organization for the upcoming Crimson Reign event, and Imara Vex is among their ranks, serving as her first official appearance in the Star Wars canon.
While not much is known about Imara Vex, the website for the upcoming Star Wars: Hunters game has confirmed that she’s a highly-skilled bounty hunter who never loses. Furthermore, she’s also seen in the game’s trailer claiming that she has the highest score in the arena-style tournament of battles featuring fighters of shapes and sizes. However, Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters from writer Charles Soule with artists Luke Ross and David Messina reveals that she has ties to Crimson Dawn, the organization first founded by Darth Maul which has since evolved under the command of Lady Qi’ra.
With the Hutt Clans opening fire on Darth Vader’s Imperial Star Destroyer in response to the chaos created by Crimson Dawn’s auction of Han Solo, the gangsters have severely damaged their relationship with the Empire (the exact outcome Qi’ra was hoping for). Now, she’s gathered several agents and warriors for the next phase of her plan, intending to bring about a new age for the Dawn. Among their ranks include the Knights of Ren, Qi’ra deadliest assassin known as Deathstick, a variety of deadly bounty hunters, and Imara Vex herself.
While the exact plans for Qi’ra’s secret empire have yet to be revealed, it’s likely that it involves positioning Crimson Dawn to fill the void now that the Hutt Clans are in disarray after incurring the Empire’s wrath, seeing as how the Emperor ordered Vader to kill the Clan’s leaders (apart from Jabba, who was smart enough to leave before the escalation began). Likewise, while Imara Vex is a fun Easter egg for this issue, it would certainly be exciting to see her story revealed in future issues as she helps those plans come to fruition.
While The War of the Bounty Hunters might be over, more details about Imara Vex would certainly be nice. There’s still the ongoing Bounty Hunters series from Ethan Sacks and Paolo Villanelli that Vex could appear in, as well as the upcoming Crimson Reign event in December, serving as the second chapter of this new trilogy within the original Star Wars films. In any case, Imara Vex will soon be a playable character in Star Wars: Hunters when it releases in 2022.
