Star Wars Eclipse Could Feature Darth Plagueis

Lucasfilm announced Star Wars Eclipse, their first game set in the era of the High Republic, at The Game Awards 2021, and it may have introduced the idea that Darth Plagueis could be making his debut in the new canon. While Star Wars Eclipse’s release date is rumored to be several years away, the presence of the Trade Federation’s droid control ships in the game’s trailer may have been just enough of a hint to suggest that the mysterious Sith Lord may finally make an appearance.

The High Republic, an era which lasted around 200 years and ended roughly 50 years before The Phantom Menace, is newest setting in the Star Wars universe. This was a time in which the Jedi were significantly active throughout the galaxy and is referred to as their golden age, as the Jedi were truly the peacekeepers of the galaxy. Lucasfilm created the High Republic to use as a vehicle to produce new Star Wars stories that were detached from any other previously told stories. But with the era now pushing into other types of content, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see its few connections to the existing stories begin to emerge.

At The Game Awards 2021, one of the biggest surprise announcements was Star Wars Eclipse, an action adventure game set in the High Republic that is being developed by Quantic Dream. Arguably the most eye catching part of the Star Wars Eclipse’s trailer was the presence of the Trade Federation’s droid control ships. To this point, the Trade Federation has not been involved in High Republic stories, which could be an indication that Star Wars Eclipse is set towards the end of the era. And if that is the case, it would place the game somewhere around 50 years before the beginning of The Phantom Menace, which would make the potential appearance of Darth Plagueis a very realistic possibility.

Star Wars Eclipse Could Introduce Darth Plagueis to the New Canon

While not much is known about the mysterious Sith lord, there is enough information that can be pieced together to determine that it’s very possible that Darth Plagueis was active by the end of the High Republic. Palpatine reveals in Revenge of the Sith that Plagueis was searching for a way to conquer death before he was killed by his apprentice, which would suggest that Plagueis was approaching the end of the Muun’s 100 year lifespan. If Star Wars Eclipse does take place at the end of the High Republic, it would make Plagueis somewhere between 40 and 50 years old, which is more than old enough for him to have established himself as a dark side presence in the galaxy. And alongside the upcoming Disney+ series, Star Wars: The Acolyte, which will explore the emergence of the dark side at the end of the High Republic era, this is a prime target to delve into the idea that Plagueis was the true mastermind behind Palpatine’s plans in the Skywalker Saga.

Theories surrounding Darth Plagueis aren’t exactly new. As soon as the Star Wars sequel trilogy introduced Snoke, fans immediately suspected that the two were the same character and the desire for content regarding Plagueis has not ceased. Star Wars fans are dying for information about the Sith lord who trained Darth Sidious and he will remain a point of focus until his story is told. And with the High Republic possibly setting itself up to tell that story, Star Wars Eclipse could finally see Plagueis’ long awaited appearance in the new canon.
