Star Wars Eclipse Could Introduce A New Dark Side Faction

Announced at The Game Awards 2021, Star Wars Eclipse not only brings players to the High Republic era, but possibly also hints at a new dark side faction aside from the Sith. In Star Wars, the Force is split into two main groups, the Jedi and the Sith. Each group has sub-factions with diverse cultures and different interpretations of the Force. However, the groups have changed between Star Wars Legends and the main canon. The former had multiple factions for the Jedi and Sith, but the latter streamlined them greatly. That could be set to change with the High Republic-set Star Wars Eclipse, however, as with the Sith having been extinct for hundreds of years by the time of that era, it wouldn’t be possible to feature them in any significant way.

The Star Wars Legends’ dark side factions, while widespread, had unique cultures and perspectives. The dark Jedi, the oldest faction, were Jedi frustrated with the limitations of their Order rather than a desire for power. Another was the Bando Gora, a cult-like criminal syndicate that ravaged the Outer Rim and was a threat for Jedi and Sith. A more prominent faction in both Legends and the current canon is the Nightsisters of Dathomir, who also featured in Jedi: Fallen Order. In Legends, they were force-sensitive witches banished for their use of the dark side; in canon, they were dark side users whose powers were amplified by their planet.

Star Wars Eclipse’s reveal trailer featured multiple groups of characters, but the most prominent was the grey-skinned one performing some kind of ritual. The drums pick up as the trailer ratchets up in tone and, as the music weaves through each scene, it cumulates in a giant space battle between the Trade Federation and an unknown fleet of ships before abruptly stopping. While there is an opposing force in the trailer, the ritualistic performance of the drummers and the figure covered in an oozy black sludge suggest another faction could be present. The faction likely leans to the dark side, as the drummer’s performance was presented ominously.

Star Wars Eclipse Hints At A Third Dark Side Faction

The Star Wars Eclipse trailer is split between two key perspectives: the galaxy during the High Republic era and the drummers’ performance. Along with the music, each scene is filled with uncertainty or conflict, from the various races and citizens pensively staring out of the screen, to the two Jedi igniting their High Republic-era lightsabers against a wave of aliens. The trailer paints a picture of a galaxy in discord, which could make it an ideal time for a dark side faction to begin its rise.

In Legends, while the dark side factions had diverse cultures, most were reclusive, with the more outgoing, warlike factions, either self-destructing due to infighting, fracturing off on their own, or being annihilated by the Jedi and the Republic. Like other recent canon material, Star Wars Eclipse could borrow from Legends, making the dark side faction more secretive to avoid the Republic and the Jedi. The great wars between the Jedi and Sith during the Old Republic took place long before the events of Eclipse, meaning that, if it wishes to spotlight the dark side in a significant way, other threats will have to fill the void.

The Eclipse trailer suggests the rise of a new evil in the galaxy, with the Trade Federation another key figure. The title Eclipse could symbolize the coming darkness, ending the golden age of the Republic and the Jedi. Moreover, the dark side faction and the player’s choices could build the foundation of future events that ripple throughout The Skywalker Saga era. Star Wars Eclipse has the opportunity to not only flesh out the canon in an era previously unexplored in Star Wars, but to do so in a way that is fresh and unexpected.
