Star Wars Explains Why Luke Wants To Join The Empire in A New Hope

Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #17

Although some might not realize, Luke Skywalker wanted to join the Empire before he began his journey to become a Jedi in Star Wars: A New Hope. It has now been explained why the Tatooine moisture farm boy was interested to join the cause.

When Luke voiced his wish to join “the Academy” someday in A New Hope, it wasn’t immediately clear which academy he was referring to. However, many fans have interpreted it to mean the Imperial Academy, where the Empire trains their cadets. Otherwise, Luke just meant he wanted to have a proper education away from the desert planet where he grew up. Assuming that he did want to join the Imperial Academy, there is now additional reason for the aspiration as revealed in War of the Bounty Hunters #17, written by Ethan Sacks with art by Paolo Villanelli.

As ruthless cyborg bounty hunter Beilert Valance goes up against the Empire, he mentions that the younger recruits don’t know what they’re getting themselves into. Under the Empire’s tyranny, the galaxy doesn’t collectively understand how evil they truly are. Instead, young students are sold on the idea of bringing unity and order to their planet. However, even bounty hunters can see through the facade of propaganda that is being fed to the younger generation. Beilert Valance tries to reason with an Imperial cadet, saying, “I was once just like you. A proud cadet. Believed that we were unifying the galaxy in peace and order.”

Similar to Han Solo, Beilert was once a part of the Empire when he was younger. Since bounty hunters aren’t known for their sympathy, it says a lot that he would try to be reasonable with a cadette manipulated into fighting for the cause. Based on what fans know of Luke’s journey to become a Jedi, it’s unlikely he would have ever gotten to a point of such moral confusion. Still, it’s helpful context as to why he would have been interested in becoming a part of the Imperial Academy. As a kid, it didn’t seem like he possessed the appropriate attitude for such a pursuit. Instead, it appeared that he simply wanted to leave his aunt and uncle on Tatooine and needed an excuse.

Ironically, Luke would go onto wear stormtrooper armor and explore the Death Star in A New Hope, fulfilling some aspect of his aspiration. By that point, he’s fully aware the Imperial Academy wasn’t a good idea. Regardless, it makes sense why young people throughout the galaxy might be intrigued by a life of such adventure. Without the example of the Jedi Order, there isn’t much for a simple farm boy to look up to. Luke might have had Ben Kenobi nearby, but when it came to a life plan, he didn’t have the best judgment.
