Ahead of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s release, fans are calling for Carrie Fisher to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Fisher was, of course, one of the main stars of the original Star Wars trilogy. She made her debut as Princess Leia in A New Hope, before reprising her role in both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. When Disney purchased Lucasfilm and announced that a new trilogy was forthcoming, Fisher returned once again to the role of the newly-titled General Leia. Though the character previously helped defeat The Emperor and his forces, sparking a potentially happy ending, both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi revealed her character had continued to be embroiled in warfare and tragedy. Not only had a new regime risen up in The Empire’s place but her brother had vanished into exile and the son she’d conceived with Han Solo had turned to The Dark Side. Aligned with the enemy, that child, Kylo Ren would later kill her estranged love.

Fisher’s role in the first two of the new installments was relatively minimal, with the focus centered first on Harrison Ford’s Han Solo and then Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker. Intended to bring the Skywalker Saga to a close, Episode IX was very much intended to bring Leia to the forefront. Unfortunately, Fisher sadly passed away before the film went into official production. Despite that tragic news, however, returning director, J.J. Abrams, made it that Fisher would still serve a central role – with previously unused footage being reworked to finish out her arc. The details of the story are, expectedly, being kept firmly under wraps. It’s believed, however, that the film will serve as a fitting tribute to both the character and the actress.

Fans, however, have risen up in their own right and begun to speak out in favor of a more real-world tribute to Fisher’s legacy. Uniting on Twitter, people from all over the world have lent their voices to the cause. While an official petition has yet to emerge, as it has for the Keanu Reeves for Person of the Year campaign, the Force is strong with those looking to make it happen. The charge is currently being led by fellow Star Wars alum, Mark Hamill. After it was officially announced that Donald Trump would indeed have his star removed, Hamill was quick to suggest Fisher as the perfect replacement.

Hamill previously made the suggestion back in 2018. Star Trek actor William Shatner echoed Hamill’s statements soon after. The two recently engaged in a lighthearted spat on social media regarding the recent discovery on Mars. Regarding Fisher, however, the two are very much aligned. The fans were even quicker to agree, with their tweets of support seemingly less than 12 parsecs away from spawning an official petition.

Whatever one’s views of Trump, as a person and a president, there is no denying that Fisher is deserving of recognition. Away from Star Wars, she had built a whole body of memorable work, both on and off the screen. As well as having roles in such films as When Harry Met Sally and such TV shows as 30 Rock, Fisher also worked on the scripts for Hook and The Wedding Singer. Unfortunately, the official rules regarding posthumous recognition preclude Fisher from receiving a star in or around the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Still, that will do little to quell the desire to see Fisher’s legacy immortalized. As such, it’ll only be a matter of time she will join various other icons of the industry.
