Star Wars Finally Shows Why Lando REALLY Joined The Rebels

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars #17

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Star Wars, it’s revealed why Lando Calrissian really joined the Rebels. Taking place after the events of Empire Strikes Back, Lando has been working alongside Princess Leia, Luke, and the rest of the Rebellion as they’ve been evading the Empire. However, that doesn’t mean he considered himself to be a member of the Rebel Alliance. That being said, Lando has been helping the Rebels in their efforts to save Han Solo who’s still encased in carbonite during the War of the Bounty Hunters event, and it’s here that Leia helps Lando realize what it means to be a true Rebel.

In previous issues of Marvel’s Star Wars, Lando had been keeping his ultimate loyalties to himself despite being with the Rebels after the Empire took over Cloud City. In his mind, he was only sticking around as long their interests were aligned, combined with his guilt about betraying Han, getting him frozen in carbonite to be taken by the bounty hunter Boba Fett. However, now that the legendary hunter has lost Han with the entire galaxy scrambling to secure the valuable smuggler, Lando has joined Leia, Chewbacca, and Luke Skywalker in their rescue attempt to try and save their friend.

Now, Star Wars #17 from Charles Soule and Ramon Rosanas sees the Millennium Falcon dead in space after being hit by a seismic charge from Fett’s Firespray. Despite the inherent danger and threat of death, Lando risked his life by entering the inner workings of the Falcon to make the necessary repairs so they could get the ship running again. Afterward, he told an impressed Leia that he isn’t the untrustworthy coward she might think he is. He’s simply not interested in getting into fights he knows he’s can’t win (like the Rebellion taking on the Empire). However, when it comes to his friends and those he genuinely cares about, he’s “as brave as they come and doesn’t care about the odds”. In response, Leia tells Lando that that’s exactly what being a Rebel is all about, and her pitch strikes a solid cord with the charismatic gambler.

Describing the Rebel’s cause as “the biggest gamble of all time” was truly the perfect line to convince Lando, and it’s a brilliant move on Leia’s part. Now, it certainly seems as though Calrissian is fully on board with the idea of becoming a Rebel, and it’s about time. As revealed by Return of the Jedi, Lando will soon be instrumental in a conflict known as the Battle of Taanab as a Rebellion hero prior to Episode VI, something that would likely be pretty difficult if he didn’t believe in the Rebellion.

In any case, Lando is finally beginning to care about the Rebel Alliance, seemingly prepared to fight the Empire and join the cause in earnest. That being said, they still have to try and save Han first, whose carbonite block is right in the middle of a firefight between the Empire and the Hutts as the War of the Bounty Hunters rages on. Not only that, but Boba Fett is still in pursuit and determined to get his bounty back. Regardless, this issue of Marvel’s Star Wars serves to be a pivotal moment for Lando Calrissian, showing why he really decided to roll the dice and become a Rebel.
