Star Wars Game From Zynga Aims For 2021 Release

Zynga, a developer best known for its popular mobile and social media-based titles like Farmville and Words with Friends, announces that it may launch its Star Wars game sometime in 2021. Like much of the company’s previous work, this latest addition to the vast Star Wars universe is slated to be a mobile game, but little is known about it beyond that.

The company has been openly working on the game for nearly four months after establishing a new studio in November of last year to develop the new Star Wars title in partnership with another Zynga-owned developer, NaturalMotion. The freshly minted, Austin-based studio is being headed by Jeff Hickman and Matthew Hemby, both industry veterans who have worked previously on Star Wars projects. Zynga is not a stranger to licensed games and recently released a mobile game based on the Harry Potter franchise entitled Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells.

In a letter to its shareholders detailing its latest financial quarter, Zynga reveals that it hopes to give players a glimpse of the newest game from its new studio this summer, sharing that the game could release in 2021. The report does not expand on any specifics of the new game but does insist that the Star Wars game along with other forthcoming new games, will be important for the company’s future goals. Fans looking to learn more about the title will hopefully get to go hands-on with it during early summer when the game is set to start its soft launch.

Zynga is not the only company looking forward to releasing a game in a galaxy far, far away in the wake of Lucasfilm Games’ relaunch. The unexpected announcement signaled a shift in the way the Star Wars franchise would be handled in the gaming industry and it did not take long to get some exciting updates. Just days after the Lucasfilm Games rebranding, Ubisoft revealed it would be working with Massive Entertainment on an open-world Star Wars game. Little is known about the project so far, but the creators have confirmed the game will be built using Massive Entertainment’s Snowdrop Engine. Other Star Wars games from EA are also rumored to be in development.

Zynga is expecting to get its Star Wars game’s soft launch rolling in just a few months, which is exciting, but there is a lot of competition for gamer’s attention in that universe right now. With a variety of both rumored and confirmed games, shows, and more seemingly on the horizon, the next couple of years are sure to be busy ones for the Star Wars franchise.
