Star Wars Hera Syndulla Should Be the Next Ahsoka Tano

Ahsoka Tano is a Star Wars favorite. Her character links the prequel era to the Battle of Yavin as she grows from perky padawan into a battle-hardened but ever optimistic Force-wielder. She became the narrative force that era needed, a Light Side contrast to the films’ focus on Anakin’s fall. But with Star Wars turning towards the time between the end of the Empire and the rise of the next generation of Jedi, it’s time to show someone else’s journey. That journey should be of Hera Syndulla, the heart of Star Wars Rebels.

Introduced to audiences in the first episodes of Rebels as the competent, unshakable pilot of the Ghost, Hera quickly became a guiding light for the burgeoning Resistance. Having witnessed the fall of her homeworld, Ryloth, Hera gathered a crew and became an integral part of building up the resistance network before the events at Yavin. By the time the Rebellion took the fight out into the open, Hera was granted the rank of General.

The early seasons of Rebels showed her embracing the best parts of the Team Mom trope, being an encouraging and demanding presence in equal measure, with her sidekick droid Chopper keeping things homicidally light. Though the series was built to showcase Ezra Bridger’s rise as a Jedi, there was plenty of room to explore the stories that shaped all of its cast. It was Hera’s history that became integral in the final seasons, however, putting her and the Ghost in direct conflict with a reintroduced-to-canon Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Though the final season of Rebels left a number of questions hanging as to the fate of its crew, from wherever Ezra is to how much connection to the living side of the Force Kanan Jarrus has, the biggest question for many was what waited in Hera’s future. There has been a surprising amount of clues already, indicating she has a bigger role in the rise of the New Republic, and it’s a future she deserves.

The Ghost has been spotted twice in live action. Rogue One put the Ghost in play during the Battle of Scarif and even name-checked General Syndulla during the film. Much later, during the climax of Rise of Skywalker, the Ghost is also officially confirmed to be among the fleet Lando Calrissian gathers to support the New Republic during the Battle of Exogol.

Hera’s actions beyond the events of Rebels were further codified recently in the the video game Star Wars: Squadrons and its prequel tie-in novels, Alphabet Squadron and Shadow Fall, written by Alexander Freed. Given command of a new flagship, the Lodestar, General Syndulla oversees a small but feisty X-Wing squadron as they take on the Shadow Wing, the 204th Imperial Fighter Wing. This sets her up to become a welcome figure during the events of the newest Star Wars game, but more than that, makes her a stable part of the continuing civil war and the rebuilding of the Republic.

Hera’s reliability makes her an ideal choice to be the face of the era after the Empire’s fall. A New Republic needs steady ground to build on, and there are few characters in Star Wars that can match Hera for stability. More than that, she’s something Star Wars always has room for — a loving family figure who understands the struggle to balance the galaxy’s needs and her own. With her son Jacen at her side, Hera has the approachability and human complexity that General Leia and Queen Amidala rarely had the opportunity to share with viewers.

While it’s usually the Jedi that lead movie audiences deeper into a galaxy far, far away, the spin-offs give a lot more room for other characters. Star Wars’ decision to step away from the Jedi storylines and into that of other characters — from Clones developing their own personalities to a lone Mandalorian and his adopted child — prove that fans are eager to follow not just the Force, but people with relatable human motives. Hera Syndulla is the best of these: a hero, a mother, a pilot and a leader. She’s the prime choice to be the face of this era of the galaxy.
