Star Wars How Luke Skywalkers Lightsaber Reflects His Mentors

Luke Skywalker completed a vital rite of passage for all Jedi by building his own lightsaber in between films in the original Star Wars trilogy, and his weapon’s design reflects those of his two mentors. The hilt of Luke’s green lightsaber is nearly identical to Obi-Wan’s original trilogy and Clone Wars-era weapon, but the biggest difference is the blade color. Luke’s weapon produces a green blade, like that of Yoda’s lightsaber. The Force-imbued crystals that power all lightsabers differ slightly between canon and the original timeline, the Expanded Universe (aka Legends), so the reasoning for Luke’s blade color depends on the continuity.

The construction of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber was described in detail in the Legends-era novel Shadows of the Empire. In between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Luke travels to Obi-Wan Kenobi’s home on Tatooine as he gradually completes his journey to Jedi Knighthood through self-training. Before his death, Kenobi left a variety of documents and artifacts behind for Luke in preparation for Luke’s eventual Jedi training. Among them were instructions on how to build a lightsaber, as well as schematics for his own weapon. Luke meticulously followed Kenobi’s instructions and crafted a lightsaber that would be his signature weapon for the rest of his life. The canon sourcebook Ultimate Star Wars vaguely touches on the construction of Luke’s lightsaber, but the full story of how and when Luke built it in canon has yet to be told.

What both continuities establish is that Luke consciously built the hilt to resemble Kenobi’s, in part because Kenobi’s schematics were the only reference point Luke had for lightsaber construction. For the previous three years, Luke had used his father’s weapon, but he never studied it like he did Kenobi’s. As for the blade color, the Force-connected kyber crystals in Legends glow in the same color as the blade they’ll produce, meaning that the prospective Jedi chooses their color (usually blue or green). Some Jedi would, on rare occasions, fabricate their own crystal using tools and the Force itself. With the Empire having destroyed most natural sources for lightsaber crystals, Luke created one, using Kenobi’s instructions once again. In Star Wars canon, kyber crystals can only be found naturally (synthetic kybers are too unstable for use in lightsabers), and they become a specific color upon bonding with a Force user. Luke somehow obtained a kyber in canon, and it became green when he bonded with it, the same color as the lightsaber of his other master, Yoda.

Luke’s decision in Legends to make his lightsaber blade the same color as Yoda’s was likely to honor his second mentor since the hilt was already almost identical to his first mentor’s weapon. In Legends, Yoda still had his prequel-era lightsaber during his exile on Dagobah in Star Wars. He is shown wielding it in an issue of the Star Wars Tales comic series and likely used it while training Luke on Dagobah. In canon, Yoda didn’t recover the weapon after his battle with Darth Sidious in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, so Luke would never see it during his training. Luke’s kyber crystal turning green in the canon may have been the Force’s way of honoring Luke’s second mentor for him.

The real-world explanation for the lightsaber reflecting Luke’s mentors so closely is far less fascinating. The props for Luke’s lightsaber in Return of the Jedi were the same ones used by Alec Guinness in Star Wars (albeit with some slight aesthetic modifications), making them literally the same as Kenobi’s. As seen in teaser trailers, Luke Skywalker’s green lightsaber originally had a blue blade like Obi-Wan Kenobi’s. At the time, there were only two lightsaber blade colors: blue for Jedi and red for Sith. During the daytime fight scene in act 1 of Return of the Jedi, the blade’s blue color blended in with the clear blue sky in certain moments, so the filmmakers decided to simply make it green for the whole film.
