Star Wars Jango Fetts Helmet Was Destroyed Before Boba Wore the Armor

Boba Fett’s armor in The Mandalorian is largely repurposed from his father, Jango Fett’s – but his helmet was destroyed long before the events taking place in the Disney+ series, and well before the character’s film debut in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. The 10-year-old Boba is seen holding Jango’s helmet after Mace Windu kills him in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, making this helmet part of an iconic scene in the film, and a source of sympathy for Boba – even if his bounty hunter father had been working for Count Dooku, the evil apprentice of Darth Sidious.

Given that Boba is wearing the rest of his father’s armor – repainting it green two years later, during the events of Star Wars Boba Fett: Pursuit – it would be natural to assume that the adult Boba Fett is wearing Jango Fett’s helmet. But this isn’t the case, as this one part of the suit couldn’t be restored, due to it being blown up.

In fact, it was Boba who sacrificed his father’s helmet, planting a bomb inside it in an attempt to assassinate his father’s killer in the episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 2, (“Death Trap,“ “R2 Come Home,” and “Lethal Trackdown,”). In “R2 Come Home”, at the encouragement of Aurra Sing, Boba sabotaged the Republic’s Endurance, causing the ship to crash on the planet Vanqor. He rigged a bomb inside his father’s helmet, placing it amidst the debris on the ship’s mostly intact bridge, knowing that Mace Windu and Anakin Skywalker would try to rescue any survivors. The bomb’s blast almost killed them, but Windu and Skywalker both survived to fight another day.

Jango Fett’s helmet is destroyed when the bomb explodes, so viewers never see the younger Fett don the helmet of the elder. Multiple sources confirm that the rest of the armor is Jango’s, repainted and restored by Boba Fett in memory of his father, according to Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need To Know, Updated and Expanded (2017). Leland Y. Chee, writing in Star Wars Insider August/September 2010 issue, also indicated that Boba Fett has “multiple sets of armor”, potentially inherited from his father, as “even Jango Fett had a spare rocket pack”.

Star Wars fans fell in love with Boba Fett because of his armor and mysterious, enigmatic character (as famously he has only 4 lines in The Empire Strikes Back, and none in Return of the Jedi). With Boba Fett getting his own television series, The Book of Boba Fett, coming to Disney+ in December 2021, fans of the Fett are certain to have more of their lingering questions answered, hopefully without ruining the inherent magic of the character. But the question of what happened to his father’s helmet was resolved long before the events of The Mandalorian.
