Star Wars Leias 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Outfits

Leia Organa is one of the most iconic and inspiring characters in all of the Star Wars universe. Bold and empowered, compassionate and loving, Leia is a heroine for the ages who represents the best of both humanity and science fiction at large. Artfully portrayed across four decades by Carrie Fisher, Leia is a character who can truly never be replaced.

Her absence looms large whenever she’s not on screen, and whenever she’s not the one speaking and inspiring the masses. But Leia’s inspirational qualities don’t end with her acts of bravery and her inspiring speeches. She’s also quite the fashion icon, too. Well, at least most of the time she is.

10 Best: Award Ceremony Dress

If any color is Leia Organa’s color, it would have to be the pristine white she so often wears in the original trilogy. At the end of A New Hope, Leia sports one of her most stunning gowns at the medal awarding ceremony.

Accompanying the gorgeous dress is a flashy silver necklace and matching bracelets. Her hair is piled in a high braided bun atop her head, just one of her many incredible hairstyles that perfectly accentuate her strong cheekbones.

9 Worst: The Infamous Bikini

Leia’s outfit when she is forced to serve as a slave at Jabba’s Palace in Return of the Jedi might be one of the series’ most well known looks, but that doesn’t make it any easier to like or approve of.

Carrie Fisher famously hated the gaudy outfit, which finds Leia wearing golden chains and a barely there bikini, along with a rope-like braid that winds down her side. The only redeeming feature of the outfit is that Leia is able to strangle Jabba with her own chain in the end.

8 Best: Among the Clouds

Star Wars Leias 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Outfits

Han and Leia’s stay in Bespin in Empire Strikes Back may be a short one, and one that doesn’t exactly go as planned either. But the airy aesthetic of Cloud City provides Leia with one of her most effortless looks, and one that looks incredibly comfortable, too.

Once again with her hair in braids, but this time in ringlets, Leia wears a layered outfit consisting of a short red doublet-style dress, red pants, red shoes, and a lush white floor length robe.

7 Worst: Jedi Training

Star Wars Leias 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Outfits

Leia plays a significant, albeit confusing role in The Rise of Skywalker, no matter how little screentime she might actually have. But in one of these few moments, made possible by body doubles and CGI, Leia gets an outfit that isn’t just derivative, it’s insulting.

In a moment of total retroactive continuity, Leia is depicted as having trained in the ways of the Jedi with her brother, Luke. Her outfit – a space jumpsuit eerily reminiscent of many of Luke’s Rebellion outfits, and even Vader’s own suit – is entirely forgettable.

6 Best: Hoth Snow Gear

Empire Strikes Back offers many of Leia’s greatest looks, but it doesn’t get better than her commanding fashion choices at Echo Base on Hoth. With her hair braided in a crown atop her head, Leia is ready and waiting for the call to action.

Her outfit is likewise both perfectly stylish and practical, appropriate for the harsh climate of the snowy planet while also commanding respect. Once again all in white, Leia sports a sleek pantsuit and jacket, layered over with a puffy white vest.

5 Worst: Undercover on Endor

Star Wars Leias 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Outfits

There are many things about Leia’s look in the forests of Endor that work in her favor. Her hair is once again braided beautifully, and the lush greens of the forest perfectly complement the muted greens of her outfit.

But the entire look is ruined by the clunky helmet she sports while riding her speeder, and the overly large poncho she wears over the rest of her outfit. Not even someone as effortlessly stylish as Leia could pull this off.

4 Best: The Birth of Space Buns

Star Wars Leias 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Outfits

If there’s any one outfit that Leia is best known for wearing, it has to be the outfit in which fans first meet her. Most depictions of Leia in fan works, parodies, and other media depict her with the timeless classic look of her space bun hairstyle.

But beyond the space buns, the rest of Leia’s look at the start of A New Hope is effortless and timeless. The floor length white dress, complete with a covert hood, perfectly complements her figure. Pairing it with the white boots and thick silver belt is just the cherry on top.

3 Worst: Boussh

As should be clear by now, the outfits that often go with undercover work in a galaxy far, far away usually aren’t the most flattering. Unfortunately, that even applies to Leia as she works to save Han Solo from being held captive in carbonite at Jabba’s Palace.

To be fair, the overly large brown suit of the bounty hunter Boussh, along with the discomfiting mask and voice modulation box, would be a hard look for anyone in the galaxy to make look good.

2 Best: Ewok Village

Star Wars Leias 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Outfits

It’s rare when characters in a galaxy far, far away are allowed to be at peace and treat themselves with kindness. That’s what makes Leia’s look in the Ewok Village at the end of Return of the Jedi such a treat.

It’s the first time that Leia is shown with her beautiful hair down and flowing free, accentuated with two thin braids. The simple brown villager dress, with a flattering leg slit accent, also suits her perfectly.

1 Worst: A Forceful Farewell

Leia doesn’t feature prominently in The Force Awakens, but one of her looks sure does leave a lasting impression – and not at all for the right reasons.

Referred to by Carrie Fisher as a “baboon’s ass,” Leia’s nonsensical hairstyle at the Resistance base is completely unflattering. The boxy blue dress with awkward, jagged cutouts at the neckline also doesn’t do Leia any favors in the fashion department.
