Star Wars Makes The Empire Replacing Clone Troopers With Stormtroopers Worse

One of the first moves the Empire made was to replace clone troopers with stormtroopers, and Star Wars: The Bad Batch further highlights why that was a bad decision. While the process of forming the Galactic Empire, replacing the Republic, meant that the new governing body inherited an army of clones – ones who had just loyally carried out Order 66, no less – Palpatine decided to change things up. The clone troopers were replaced, making way for human recruits who would become Imperial stormtroopers.

Palpatine shut down the cloning facilities on Kamino immediately after the Imperial era commenced, and that’s something Star Wars: The Bad Batch explores, as Admiral Tarkin visits the labs to inform of the decision to halt production. There are a few factors involved, including a belief that using recruits will lead to greater control and, crucially, because of how much the clones cost. With the Clone Wars over, then there’s ostensibly no need for such expensive recruits, or so the Empire thought.

There’s a flaw in this plan, and it’s one very clearly highlighted to Tarkin by Lama Su in The Bad Batch episode 1, “Aftermath,”: recruits could never be as highly skilled or efficient as clone troopers. Tarkin himself observes some of this by watching Clone Force 99 in action, and he is clearly impressed by their abilities, and particularly interested in the mutations of Crosshair, given he still followed Order 66. Nonetheless, while clones will play a small part in the Empire’s future, for the most part Tarkin does not heed the warning, and it proves costly. Imperial stormtroopers have infamously bad aim, which is in stark contrast to the well-trained clone troopers. They may have been cheaper, but it’s hard to believe the Empire was truly better off.

While the Empire controlled the galaxy, it wasn’t without its threats, as various insurgencies and uprisings mounted across the years, before the true formation of the Rebel Alliance and the beginning of the Galactic Civil War. Of course, the very nature of Star Wars’ story dictates the Empire had to lose, but there’s a fair question to be asked over how much stronger a position they would’ve been in with clone troopers. Clones would have posed a far greater challenge for Luke Skywalker and Han Solo’s mission to rescue Princess Leia, for instance, and their much better aim and skill with a blaster would surely have meant greater losses for the Rebels across the course of the war.

With Star Wars: The Bad Batch revealing that the Empire was warned about this, but pressed ahead anyway, it makes the decision seem worse, though it is in keeping with the arrogance and hubris of the dark side. Overconfidence was a key factor in why the Empire was ultimately defeated, which stretches from everything from belief in the Death Star to belief in Darth Vader. The fact that it replaced clone troopers with stormtroopers just to save money – something, it should be noted, the Empire was seemingly never short of – may have spared it a few credits, but it cost a lot more in the long run.
