Mark Hamill is having fun reflecting on just how far Luke Skywalker’s action figures have come since the release of the first Star Wars film in 1977. The first episode in the blockbuster space opera, of course, revolutionized the movie marketing industry in the wake of the film’s surprise reception at the box office four decades ago, when George Lucas made the genius move of securing the rights to produce toys based on the film. Among them were the 3 3/4-inch action figures produced by Kenner, as well as 3 3/4-inch vehicles including Luke’s Landspeeder and X-wing fighter.

Included in the first series of figures that were produced were representations of Luke, Princess Leia and Han Solo, which bared little, if any, resemblance to their real-life inspirations Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford. It didn’t seem to matter to kids of all ages buying the figures, though, as a buying frenzy transformed Kenner, then a small, Cincinnati-based toy company, into a major player overnight. After the original Star Wars film trilogy ran its course, the Kenner action figure line faded away, only to resurface in 1995 with a new line in collaboration with Hasbro, which eventually acquired the company in a merger in 2000.

Now in an apparent nod to Star Wars: The Last Jedi making its debut this week on digital and the pending Blu-ray/DVD/4K release around the corner, Hamill took time Wednesday to reflect on the evolution of his Luke action figures with a series of pictures and hilarious descriptions in a tweet, beginning with the appropriate introduction, “Luke How Far I’ve Come.” See the tweet below.

Naturally included is the first Luke figure, which Hamill described as “Generic Lemon-Haired Ken Doll Luke,” along with the bacta tank version of Luke from The Empire Strikes Back (which Hamill calls the “Black-Haired Semi-Conscious Adult-Diaper Luke”). Hamill also included in the lineup the 1995 figure of Luke from Kenner/Hasbro (the “Pumped-Up Roid-Rage” version) as well as an upcoming 12-inch release from Hot Toys that he dubbed, “Senior Citizen Jedi Pension-Plan Future Force-Ghost Luke.”

As one of the biggest and best promoters of the Star Wars film saga, it’s fun to see Hamill showing his great sense of humor as he pokes fun at all of the plastic iterations of his likeness over the years. As a huge collector himself (and host of his own collectibles-centric web series Mark Hamill’s Pop Culture Quest), the ribbing of his Star Wars figures is playful, of course, and ultimately a wonderful ode that has brought such joy to countless Star Wars fans across the globe. Lucky for Hamill and his fellow collectors, with new Star Wars spinoffs including Solo, trilogies and TV shows in the works (and don’t forget about Episode IX), there are plenty more action figures – with much better character likenesses than the old days – on the way.
