He’s the chosen one, the one who brought the balance to the Force, and the one whose surname Star Wars just doesn’t want to leave out in any film– Anakin Skywalker. Now, while the whole franchise and the fandoms and every viewer thinks and knows that much about Anakin, the Jedi Council surprisingly doesn’t.

They simply either don’t care much about Anakin at all or are way too overconfident in their perch during the Prequel trilogy. The result was a gross underestimation of Anakin’s power where they all but insult the character verbally. Still, Anakin manages to prove himself many times over despite being put down by the Council.

10 UNDERESTIMATED: “TOO OLD” FOR TRAINING

Ahh, the classic Jedi Council opening line for any Skywalker. Apparently, they like them young and Anakin, even as a visibly young boy during The Phantom Menace, was still too old. Then they never fully explain why age matters.

They also notably did this to Luke Skywalker, well, Yoda did. However, the way they say it to Anakin is rather insensitive, verbally rejecting a kid to his face instead of talking behind closed doors.

9 PROVED THEM WRONG: DEFEATING COUNT DOOKU

This was one of Anakin’s finest “in-your-face” moments to the Jedi Council. Count Dooku was a match for Yoda and was too much for Obi-Wan. Anakin managed to do a comeback against Dooku after the humiliation he suffered in Attack of the Clones.

Anakin, with his aggressive lightsaber fighting style, was able to singlehandedly defeat Dooku. That’s not something even Yoda could do quickly. Way too much hinged on Anakin’s victory against Dooku, such as his, Obi-Wan’s, and Palpatine’s lives as well as a big portion of the Clone Wars.

8 UNDERESTIMATED: NOT GIVING HIM AN OLDER MASTER

It’s quite obvious during Attack of the Clones that Anakin’s impulsiveness (and hormones) was too much for Obi-Wan. He was a relatively green Jedi Master– not that he was incapable in any way. It’s just that Anakin was the prophesized Chosen One who had way too many issues.

Perhaps the Council could have treated him with care better– the kind of teaching, freedom, and understanding that Qui-Gon wanted to provide for Anakin– but no, they gave Anakin to a stalwart disciplinarian. While he and Obi-Wan did have chemistry, wiser and older Jedi Masters could have curbed Anakin’s course to the Dark Side in a more clever and less destructive way.

7 PROVED THEM WRONG: SAVING OBI-WAN

Luckily, Anakin Skywalker managed to get through the Council’s rather strict age requirements thanks to Qui-Gon Jinn’s insistence. Otherwise, the Council would never have maintained one of their most loyal and decorated Jedi Masters, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Anakin has saved Obi-Wan’s life many times in the Prequels and in fact, he has visibly saved Obi-Wan more than Obi-Wan saved him. Even so, the Jedi Council probably failed to reward Anakin as it was his rash actions that led him to save Obi-Wan.

6 UNDERESTIMATED: BENCHED OUT OF COMBAT

Turns out even Qui-Gon was no exception to underestimating Anakin. As early as in The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon was already giving some restrictive orders to Anakin during the Battle of Naboo to stay in the cockpit of a ship even as he let him compete in a dangerous contest earlier.

That was the weird part. Qui-Gon bet everything on Anakin winning a highly lethal podracing tournament with older and more violent opponents and without helping him. However, a battle is too much for a kid who won a death race, because logic.

5 PROVED THEM WRONG: WINNING THE BATTLE OF NABOO

Thankfully, Anakin had none of Qui-Gon’s gin and found a way to circumvent his irrational order. “Stay in the cockpit” meant he could fly the ship and still join the battle– or maybe that was what Qui-Gon had in mind all along?

Either way, Anakin being an impatient kid with an attention disorder managed to become instrumental in the Battle of Naboo. He… committed mass murder as a kid by blowing up a whole Federation Control Ship, but the price was worth it since Naboo and the Gungans (Jar Jar included, sadly) were saved.

4 UNDERESTIMATED: NOT GRANTING HIM THE RANK OF MASTER

Star Wars Prequels 5 Times The Jedi Council Underestimated Anakin Skywalkers Powers (& 5 Times He Proved Them Wrong)

It would seem that the Jedi Council never knew that Anakin became a war hero before he even officially became a Jedi. If they did, he’d probably have become the youngest Jedi Master who was also allowed on the Council.

Sadly for Anakin, Mace Windu is not impressed by any of his accolades at such a young age. To them, Anakin was to be nothing more than a tool used to spy on Senator Palpatine– not worthy enough yet to become a Master despite being on the Council. It’s outrageous, it’s unfair.

3 PROVED THEM WRONG: SAVING PADME

Prior to contributing to Padme Amidala’s death, Anakin saved her life during the rather tense pre-Clone War period during the Attack of the Clones. Obi-Wan casually just brushes off Anakin’s connection to Padme and sensing danger around her as a weakness.

However, this actually led to Anakin sensing the assassination attempt that’s as small as two poisonous mutant caterpillars. Arguably, Obi-Wan sensed those too but it appears Anakin did so earlier and those few seconds were crucial in saving Padme.

2 UNDERESTIMATED: LEAVING ANAKIN ON MUSTAFAR

Star Wars Prequels 5 Times The Jedi Council Underestimated Anakin Skywalkers Powers (& 5 Times He Proved Them Wrong)

We do have Obi-Wan, the plot, and the continuity to blame for Anakin surviving to formally become Darth Vader but Obi-Wan really could have ended it then and there. A lot seems to be going on his mind during that moment.

It could be that he couldn’t stand killing Anakin by himself but he still left him to die as a barbecue on Mustafar. Another angle would be Obi-Wan thinking Anakin wouldn’t be able to recover from that, thus underestimating him and not viewing him as a threat anymore. It could also be that he doesn’t want to deal in absolutes since he’s not a Sith. Whatever it is, it set back the Force balance by a lot.

1 PROVED THEM WRONG: EXPOSING PALPATINE

Anakin had all the reasons to turn to the Dark Side after everything the Jedi Council put him through. However, he still delivered as their doormat golden boy and remained loyal by exposing Palpatine to Mace Windu.

He could have easily fallen to Palpatine’s seduction and the Council seemingly didn’t expect much from him being a spy but he still delivered. Too bad that was the last time he proved the Jedi Council wrong, they all mostly get obliterated afterward.
