Star Wars: Ranking Every Lightsaber Fight Of The Sequel Trilogy

The Star Wars sequel trilogy ended in December with The Rise of Skywalker releasing in theatres. That movie saw Kylo Ren and Rey engage in lightsaber combat on two occasions, with the duo then teaming up to take down Emperor Palpatine at the end of the blockbuster.

The sequel trilogy gave fans many lightsaber sequences, with some better than others. We now run the rule over the lightsaber battles that took place in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, ranking the duels from worst to best.

8 Luke Skywalker vs Kylo Ren (Flashback, The Last Jedi)

It’s just a brief showdown but the one between a younger Luke Skywalker and Ben Solo in The Last Jedi certainly caused outrage.

A fight between master and apprentice breaks out after Kylo Ren thinks Luke is about to murder him, something the Jedi doesn’t exactly deny. They draw their lightsabers and clash before Kylo brings their hut crashing down and is able to get away. This certainly angered fans, many of whom didn’t think Luke would act that way given how he backed Darth Vader and resisted the dark side during the events of the original trilogy.

7 Finn vs Kylo Ren (The Force Awakens)

After knocking out Rey, Kylo Ren attempts to kill stormtrooper-turned-Resistance-fighter Finn in the woods of Starkiller Base. Despite Ren’s years on training, though, Finn puts up a good fight and is able to hold his own before having his back sliced up.

This, again, split opinion. How can somebody with no force sensitivity (that we know of) fight against somebody as powerful as Kylo Ren? And injure him too? This didn’t make sense, hence why it sits so low on our rankings.

6 Luke Skywalker vs Kylo Ren (The Last Jedi)

Kylo Ren certainly appears to be the man on top when he draws his lightsaber against Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi. He’d murdered Supreme Leader Snoke earlier in the movie and fans were excited to see the duo lock horns in a fiery showdown to the death on the beautiful planet of Crait.

But while Luke’s decision to trick Kylo into THINKING he’s there is impressive, it again split opinion among fans of the saga. Many wanted to see the two biggest characters fight it out but what we get is all too brief, with Luke effortlessly dodging Kylo’s attempts on his life. We can’t help but feel a proper duel between the two would have been the right way to go.

5 Rey vs Kylo Ren (Kijimi, The Rise of Skywalker)

Rey and Kylo Ren are the two big characters of the sequel trilogy, meaning they fight many times throughout the course of the three movies. And one of their last showdowns comes when Rey is on Kijimi – and Kylo Ren is in his quarters.

What’s really cool about this showdown is how they’re in two separate locations but use their force bond to battle each other. Ultimately it leads to them destroying Darth Vader’s helmet, symbolizing how Kylo Ren would later switch from the dark side back to the light later on in the movie.

4 Kylo Ren vs Knights of Ren (The Rise of Skywalker)

Kylo Ren does indeed become redeemed and, by the end of The Rise of Skywalker, is willing to fight alongside Rey in order to ensure the galaxy be saved from another villainous rule of terror by Emperor Palpatine.

He travels to Exegol without his lightsaber where he encounters the Knights of Ren. They initially beat him up pretty badly but, in a brilliant twist, Rey gives Ben the same lightsaber once wielded by Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker. He then performs a cocky little shrug, reminiscent of Han Solo in Return of the Jedi, and slaughters his old friends one by one.

3 Rey vs Kylo Ren (The Force Awakens)

In The Force Awakens, after Finn is defeated, Rey springs back into action. This paves the way for one of the most-beautiful lightsabers fights not just of the sequel trilogy but the entire franchise as well.

They battle in the woods near Starkiller Base, their red and blue lightsabers standing out amid the snowy backdrop. It ends in a fascinating way, too, with Rey defeating Kylo and looking set to kill him before the elements make that impossible. This set things up nicely for the sequel, raising all kinds of possibilities in the process.

2 Rey and Kylo Ren vs Praetorian Guards (The Last Jedi)

The Last Jedi is often criticized for its lack of lightsaber action. But there’s no denying that the battle between Rey and Kylo Ren against the Praetorian Guards in Supreme Leader Snoke’s throne room is a thrilling sequence to watch.

Snoke’s death had everybody shocked but nobody was expecting the fight between Rey and Kylo vs Snoke’s guards to break out as well. The way they zipped around the room had everybody watching attentively and their emotional exchange in the aftermath of the battle is a huge moment in the series. The revelation that Rey’s parents are nobodies is particularly shocking.

1 Rey vs Kylo Ren (The Death Star, The Rise of Skywalker)

Sitting top of our list of epic lightsaber duels from the sequel trilogy is the one between Kylo Ren and Rey on the remains of the second Death Star, which we’d last seen at the end of 1983’s Return of the Jedi.

Just wow. Everything about this scene is Star Wars, with the various throwbacks to the original trilogy certainly hitting us in the feels. It’s also the lightsaber showdown that matters the most. With Kylo defeated he decides to revert back to being Ben Solo thanks to a little help from his dad, Han. And Rey realizes just how powerful she is, making her actions carry significantly more weight going forward.
