Star Wars Ranking Every Planet Introduced In The Prequel Trilogy

When George Lucas was at the helm of the Star Wars saga, he always endeavored to introduce fans to exciting new worlds in every movie. In the original trilogy, fans were immersed in such iconic fictional environments as the desert wastelands of Tatooine and the forest moon of Endor.

However, by the time the prequel trilogy rolled around, Lucas was running out of ecosystems, so there’s a planet where it rains all the time, a dusty red planet, and a planet that looks like the Windows XP wallpaper. Still, the prequels had some unforgettable planetary settings, like a volcanic world covered in molten lava and a city that covers an entire planet.

7 Kamino

Kamino is more interesting as an off-screen plot element in Attack of the Clones than an on-screen setting. There’s a lot of intrigue in the early mystery of Obi-Wan realizing the planet has been erased from the Jedi Archives and trying to figure out why, but when he flies out there, it’s just rainy. All the planet’s non-marine life is confined to structures built on long legs over the planet-wide ocean.

Obi-Wan comes out of the rain to take a look at the cloning operation on Kamino, but the indoor environments are just as bland as outside, with sterile, all-white rooms made of CGI. The rain creates a moody, noir-ish backdrop for Obi-Wan’s fight with Jango Fett, but visually, it’s a pretty unexciting place.

6 Naboo

The green, hilly landscapes of Naboo have been compared to the standard Windows XP wallpaper. Suffice to say, it’s not a very thrilling planet to look at. But its culture and civilization are fascinating.

It has an interesting royalty structure: Padmé is the queen, but she fights on the frontlines with her soldiers. The Phantom Menace introduced fans to a few different levels of Naboo’s society. Padmé and her subjects have a lavish above-surface town, but the Gungans live in an underwater city.

5 Utapau

While Anakin is being drawn closer to the dark side by Palpatine in the middle act of Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan is dispatched to Utapau to track down General Grievous. There’s an interesting tiered structure on Utapau. Obi-Wan convenes with locals on one level and learns that Grievous and his droid armies are assembled on one of the other levels.

The planet is marked by rocky terrain, which isn’t a particularly exciting environment, but its giant sinkholes present a grave threat to visitors. Obi-Wan’s lightsaber duel with General Grievous, in which Grievous’ third and fourth arms (and his third and fourth lightsabers) are finally revealed, is one of the saga’s most spectacular duels.

4 Geonosis

Geonosis is the setting of a handful of fun set-pieces in the second and third acts of Attack of the Clones. Anakin and Padmé get unwittingly trapped in a droid factory where Padmé nearly gets burned alive in a melting pot. Obi-Wan joins them in a gladiatorial arena where they’re pitted against a trio of terrifying monsters. They’re joined by a Jedi strike force led by Mace Windu, putting more lightsabers on-screen than any other Star Wars action sequence.

But as a setting, Geonosis isn’t very visually exciting. It’s a dusty red planet, somewhat in the vein of Mars. Considering this is the planet where the Clone Wars began, it’s surprisingly dull.

3 Kashyyyk

Obi-Wan and Yoda end up being two of the only Jedi to survive the Purge in Revenge of the Sith because they’re lucky enough to be off-world on assignments when Anakin takes his final steps to the dark side on Coruscant. While Obi-Wan is on Utapau engaging General Grievous, Yoda goes to Kashyyyk to help protect the Wookiees from a droid attack.

Kashyyyk is very similar to Endor, with woodland landscapes and a furry, primitive species living in an intricate network of treehouses. But it’s filled with Wookiees as opposed to the annoyingly cutesy Ewoks – including young Chewbacca himself – so it’s better than Endor.

2 Mustafar

While Palpatine is taking over the Galactic Senate, he sends a newly anointed Darth Vader to the volcanic plains of Mustafar to wipe out the Separatists. This planet sets the perfect explosive backdrop for Obi-Wan’s long-awaited climactic duel with his fallen apprentice.

Obi-Wan thought of Anakin as a brother, but Anakin turned his back on him and the entire Jedi Order. The rage driving this duel is complemented by the flowing molten lava in the background. In Revenge of the Sith, Mustafar becomes symbolic of Vader’s downfall. This symbolism extended into subsequent Star Wars media, as Vader moved into a dark, gloomy castle on Mustafar.

1 Coruscant

After Qui-Gon picks up Anakin and deems him to be the prophesized “Chosen One,” he takes him back to the capital of the Republic to meet the Jedi Council. A giant city covers the entire planet of Coruscant, home to the headquarters of both the Galactic Senate and the Jedi Order.

The neon-drenched urban landscapes of Coruscant were influenced by the sumptuous visuals of Ridley Scott’s sci-fi noir Blade Runner. If Lucasfilm ever revisits the “Anthology” movie concept, it could set a gritty Chinatown-style neo-noir in the criminal underworld of Coruscant.
