Star Wars Rebels Ended Before A Major Mandalorian Event

Star Wars Rebels takes place before The Mandalorian, but a major event happened in the space between the shows. The Dave Filoni-produced Star Wars Rebels introduced new characters to the Star Wars universe while continuing the stories of established ones. Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), first introduced in The Clone Wars, Filoni’s previous CGI animated project, was among them. Though she began The Clone Wars as an opponent of the Mandalorian government as a member of the Death Watch, she eventually became the planet’s leader under the Republic. However, Bo-Katan’s resistance to the subsequent Imperial occupation among her planet caused the Empire’s loyalists among her people to betray her.

During the Imperial occupation, Kryze assisted fellow Mandalorian Sabine Wren in rescuing her father from the Empire’s clutches. Out of respect, Sabine offered Bo-Katan the Darksaber, a unique weapon that grants the person who wields it rule over Mandalore. Kryze initially refused, but eventually took the Darksaber and became the rightful leader of the planet.

Although their clans were still strong in numbers by the end of Rebels, the Disney+ live-action series’ Mandalorians are few and far between. It is explained that The Great Purge decimated their home planet of Mandalore prior to the events of The Mandalorian, leaving its people either dead or displaced. Bo-Katan was then left with the task of reuniting her former subjects and reclaiming her throne.

Before the Great Purge, resistance to Imperial occupation was constant on Mandalore, with Bo-Katan rallying her people against the invaders. The Empire soon realized that they would never be able to fully control the planet, and resolved to squash the freedom fighters for good. While Kryze and her allies attempted to fight back, the Imperial forces were simply too strong, and nearly all of the Mandalorians perished. The planet was looted for Beskar, a super-strong alloy used to make the Mandalorians’ near-indestructible armor. Amidst the genocide, Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) took the Darksaber from Bo-Katan, stripping her of her power once again.

The surviving Mandalorians were scattered across the galaxy. One faction, the Tribe, was forced underground by the purge, and The Mandalorian begins with them already living in secrecy. The Tribe’s fundamentalist doctrine taught its members that their home planet was cursed, and those who attempted to return to it would be killed. Among its adherents was Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), a bounty hunter who later crossed paths with Kryze. Though Djarin followed an archaic version of the Way of the Mandalore that was initially off-putting to Bo-Katan, the two had a common enemy: Moff Gideon. On top of taking the Darksaber from Kryze, he had captured Djarin’s ward, Grogu. The two joined forces against Gideon, and though they were able to rescue Grogu, Bo-Katan was unable to achieve her own goal.

In his efforts to save the child, Djarin dueled Gideon and took the Darksaber after defeating his opponent. Though he tried to give it back to Kryze, she refused. It created a possible Star Wars Rebels plot hole when Bo-Katan revealed the Darksaber could only be won through combat, considering how she got it in the first place. Beating Moff Gideon meant that Djarin had unwittingly become the rightful ruler of Mandalore, providing an interesting jumping-off point for Season 3 of The Mandalorian. His accidental ascendance leaves Bo-Katan in a precarious situation as well. If Bo-Katan fights Djarin for the Darksaber, she could win back her home planet but betray her own people in the process. If she abstains, however, Mandalore may never be restored, as Djarin is not connected to the planet in the way Kryze is.
