The original Star Wars trilogy has such incredible characters and stories weaved throughout it, with an awesome overall arc. However, alongside all this deeper substance, there is a lot of great action, which oftentimes has layers to it if the audience cares to look, but is massively entertaining either way.
With a lightsaber fight in each movie, big sprawling battles whether they be in space or on the ground, and more unique face-offs throughout planets and space, the original trilogy gives fans a great time with all of the action it offers, containing some of the best the entire saga has to offer.
10 Rescuing The Princess
The entire Death Star sequence is better as a story rather than a battle, but it still sees the heroes having to fend off swarms of stormtroopers, especially when it comes to rescuing the Princess/the Princess rescuing them.
Seeing the fierceness of Leia, the likability of Luke, and Han and Chewie in general, is great, as they blast bucketheads and attempt to escape from the Death Star unscathed.
9 Boarding Of The Tantive IV
The opening sequence of A New Hope is one of the most iconic openings in cinema as the Devastator chases down the Tantive IV, and stormtroopers proceed to board the ship and kill the rebels waiting for them.
Seeing both the starships during their chase, as well as seeing stormtroopers burst through and attack the awaiting rebels, is fantastic. It is tense, fun, and when Vader arrives, it is straight-up chilling, with his incredible black armor contrasting with the white of the ship surrounding him. It is short and one-sided but pretty great nonetheless.
8 Rescuing Han Solo
Return Of The Jedi is another thrilling start to an original trilogy movie, as the heroes plot to rescue Han Solo from his carbonite freezing and the possession of Jabba the Hutt.
After everyone has been captured, what ensues is a lot of entertaining action as Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, Lando, and the droids fend off bounty hunters, criminals, and goons to kill Jabba, destroy his barge, and bring Han back to the rebellion.
7 Obi-Wan Kenobi Vs. Darth Vader
The first-ever lightsaber duel in all of Star Wars was between the two with arguably the greatest relationship in the saga, between Obi-Wan Kenobi and his former apprentice and friend, and it is one of Star Wars’ most famous scenes.
As time has gone on has the emotional impact of this scene increased, but as a battle itself, as nostalgic as it is, it does not hold up anywhere near as others in the trilogy. Nevertheless, it does get points for concluding the Anakin/Obi-Wan journey in the physical realm and helping pave the way for what was to come in the future.
6 The Battle Of Endor
The Battle of Endor is the battle that closes out the original trilogy, and even though the war lasted a little longer, this was the most crucial step in the fall of the Empire since the Battle of Yavin.
Taking place up in space as a team attempts to destroy the space station and the moon’s ground as another team attempts to take out the shield generator. There are many great moments throughout, and even for those who have an issue with Ewok’s role, the space action is still solid, with such a feel-good, fist-pumping conclusion.
5 The Asteroid Field
The asteroid field sequence is not a typical battle, rather a dogfight and chase, but it still sees a good bit of action and is a really standout portion of what many see as Star Wars’ best movie.
This sequence highlights Han Solo’s piloting abilities, shows the spark between Han and Leia, and has one of John Williams’ most epic scores as Star Destroyers attempt to catch the heroes before being forced to launch fighters as Solo’s dangerous antics took them towards the asteroids.
4 The Battle Of Hoth
One of the ways in which The Empire Strikes Back is so brilliant is in how it defies expectations and flips the norm. Usually, a colossal battle in a movie to this point would come at the climax of the movie, this time; it comes at the start.
The Empire invades Echo Base and attempts to wipe out the rebels who desperately attempt to fight and flee. The practical effects are great, as is Vader’s inclusion, and seeing the characters scramble is tense and exhilarating, with this being the last time all of the heroes, Luke, Leia, Chewie, Han, and the droids, were together until Return Of The Jedi.
3 The Battle Of Yavin
Of course, what has always been, and may always be, the most fondly remembered space battle in the Skywalker saga is the original one, the Battle of Yavin, the battle so important it is used as a reference point for the Galactic calendar.
Everything about the battle is great, from the practical effects to the intriguing voice of Obi-Wan calling out to Luke to the tense wait to see who would strike first, the rebels to the Death Star’s exhaust port, or the Death Star to the rebel base. Throw in Vader piloting his TIE to wipe out fighters with Han saving the day, and there you have it, the best space battle of the Skywalker saga.
2 Luke Skywalker Vs. Darth Vader II
Arguably the most important story throughout Return Of The Jedi is Luke’s faith in his father as he desperately tries to make him see the light, to redeem himself. This battle is the catalyst for this arc’s conclusion.
It is a fitting follow-up to their epic previous battle, with the Emperor’s presence and the ongoing Battle of Endor only upping the stakes. Vader’s taunting of Luke, followed by Luke’s temptation and resistance of the dark side, is epic. When the battle concludes, and Vader kills the Emperor to save his son, it is one of Star Wars’ best and most emotional and satisfying moments.
1 Luke Skywalker Vs. Darth Vader
Of course, there was never any competing with their original battle on Bespin. Teased by Luke’s duel with the vision of Vader in the cave on Dagobah, this is the lightsaber battle many points to as being Star Wars’ best, alongside the Duel of the Fates and the Battle of the Heroes.
The cinematography is unbelievable in this sequence from Peter Suschitzky, as the bold colors help create some epic shots of the two characters as they do battle. The whole battle is edge-of-your-seat stuff as the two try to feel out each other before Vader proves his superiority, and it is only helped by the fact that at its conclusion was the greatest twist/reveal in all of Star Wars.
