The Star Wars franchise has given its fans some of the greatest characters to ever grace the big screen. From the original to the prequel to the sequel trilogy every generation of Star Wars fans has their favorite film and character. But one of the select few characters who has a hand in all three and a significant role in their stories is Luke Skywalker.

One of the greatest and most powerful Jedi who has ever lived, Luke Skywalker has many a quality that makes him beloved by all Star Wars fans. One of these qualities is his selflessness, Luke always puts his friends and the ones he loves, the ones he needs to save before himself, before his needs and wants. Here are 10 of the most selfless things Luke Skywalker has ever done.

10 STAYED WITH HIS AUNT & UNCLE ON TATOOINE

An act which is not often thought amongst Luke’s greatest, but is selfless enough for its place here. Luke stayed on Tatooine to help his Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen because they needed help, not because he wanted to be there.

Luke was vocal about his desire to join the Rebellion in Star Wars (A New Hope) and asked Owen to reconsider letting Luke leave sooner to do so, but Owen rejects that. Luke could have easily decided to run away, to seek help on getting off the planet, but he never does. Instead, Luke stays and helps Owen and Beru out with what they need, which is selfless indeed.

9 JOINING THE REBELLION

Speaking of joining the Rebel Alliance, that is exactly what he did and what he had wanted to do for years, go out and fight against the Empire, and it is utterly selfless that he wants to do so.

Joining the Rebellion was no light choice. The Empire had a firm grip on the galaxy, the Rebel Alliance despite its powerful members suffered losses and was a long, arduous journey for a small chance to defeat them. Luke could have lived an easier life on Tatooine or another remote planet and kept a low profile, but he wanted to do good in the galaxy, to save people and end the Empire’s tyranny.

8 FORGIVING & KEEPING FAITH IN HIS FATHER

One thing fans adore about Luke is that he never lost faith in his father. No matter what Vader did Luke always felt good inside him and so kept faith that the good could take over, and in the end, he forgave Vader for everything.

Luke may have had an easier time with things had he just helped the Rebel Alliance and killed Vader on the second Death Star, or by ignoring Vader completely with no faith or forgiveness for him. But Luke’s selflessness and his determination to bring out the good in his father led to him forgiving his father.

7 TRAINED REY DESPITE KNOWING SHE WAS A PALPATINE

One of the biggest revelations in The Rise Of Skywalker was that not only that Rey was a Palpatine, but that Luke and Leia knew and trained her in spite of this. While we do not know the story or logic behind this information, it is selfless nonetheless.

Luke would have known the risk in training a Palpatine, and he saw glimpses of it with Rey’s raw power. But Luke still obviously seen the good in Rey and decided to train her – after her convincing him of course – and led her down the Jedi path to the events that would and will unfold.

6 SAVING PRINCESS LEIA

In the famous A New Hope scene, Luke finds out Princess Leia is being held in the Death Star and Luke convinces Han to help him save her and they venture down to cell block 2187 to save her.

Luke did not need to risk his life to save the Princess and it likely slowed down the escape from the Death Star. But of course Luke went to save her, not just because of his schoolboy type crush on the princess from the hologram, but because it is in his nature to help others.

5 SAVING HAN

This was another team effort, coming 2 films later in Return Of The Jedi when Luke travels to Tatooine and Jabba’s Palace to save his best friend Han. In the process, he risks his life and the fate of the galaxy since had he died, the Empire would never have been defeated.

Luke was never going to be killed by the likes of Jabba of course. But the fact Luke, Leia, and Lando, along with the droids took time away from the war with the Empire to go save their friend is a testament to Luke’s selflessness and the care he has for his friends.

4 SHOWING DARTH VADER COMPASSION

In the same film, after arriving on the second Death Star and ensuing in a battle with Darth Vader, Luke has the clear opportunity to kill Vader after cutting off his hand. Luke does not take this chance, again highlighting his selflessness.

In that moment of pure emotion, Luke could have struck down his father, he could have taken the easier option. But he does not, instead, he spares his father and is nearly killed for it. In the end, Luke is repaid by his father saving his life and Luke’s unequivocal selflessness saves the galaxy.

3 HANDING HIMSELF TO DARTH VADER & THE EMPEROR

Before that though, after arriving on the forest moon of Endor, Luke hands himself into the Empire, leaving Han, Leia, and co behind to complete the mission. Luke does this to turn his father back to the light side of the Force.

Luke risked his life, knowing he would likely be taken in front of the Emperor, all to save his father and bring him back to the light. Handing himself in purely for this purpose is heroic, selfless and one of his best moments. He could have just stayed and aided the mission, but Luke had faith in his friends and knew what he had to do.

2 LEAVING HIS TRAINING TO SAVE HIS FRIENDS ON BESPIN

During his training with Yoda on Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back, Luke can feel his friends in danger and cuts his training short to face Vader and save his friends. This being despite Yoda’s protests.

Luke knows it is a trap set for him there on Bespin but he does not care. While this is his emotions taking over, Luke does not care and at that moment his training, his safety does not matter compared to the safety of his friends who he needs to save.

1 SAVING THE RESISTANCE ON CRAIT

The ultimate sacrifice, in The Last Jedi, while on Ach-To, Luke force projects himself to Crait to face Kylo and stall, allowing the Resistance to escape, and therefore survive. The act uses so much of Luke’s energy and life Force that after he finishes, he becomes one with the force.

The Resistance was nearly wiped out by the First Order in the film. But Luke rekindling his connection with the Force to use such a power keeps the hope for the Resistance alive, allowing them to escape, rebuild, and the events of The Rise Of Skywalker to unfold.
