The original Star Wars trilogy might be decades old, but the twists and reveals involving the Skywalker family are still fresh in fans’ minds.

To this day, the original Star Wars trilogy is one of the most significant and most excellent phenomena in cinema, creating the world’s biggest franchise and helping usher in the blockbuster era. From the get-go, the movies provided shock, with nobody predicting the success of Star Wars in 1977, but that was just the start.
In each of the three movies, some reveals and twists are brilliantly done, both building on the characters and furthering the narrative, and some standing the test of time among the greatest moments in film history.
10 Lando’s Betrayal
It was clear that the Empire and Boba Fett were going to catch up with Han and the Millennium Falcon by the end of The Empire Strikes Back, but when those doors open and Vader is casually sitting there, it is pretty stunning.
As cool and charismatic as Lando Calrissian is, there was obviously something fishy going on, and it was not a hugely shocking reveal, but it was still well done, and Vader in the pristine white dining room with Boba Fett at his side is a badass image.
9 Yoda’s Death
One of the best things to come out of The Empire Strikes Back was Yoda, one of the most powerful and most fascinating characters in the franchise to this day.
However, Yoda did not last too long into the trilogy’s final film as he peacefully passed away on Dagobah after a 900+ year life. It was not the most out-there thing ever for Yoda to pass, but for 1983 audiences, seeing a character you just got hooked on in the last film pass away would be quite a shock.
8 Han Returns
Han Solo’s scoundrel personality was infectious in Star Wars/A New Hope, but it also gave him a bit of a morally grey personality for the majority of the film, with him appearing to leave with his reward before the Battle of Yavin.
Much to the joy of fans, Han returned just in time to take out Darth Vader’s ship, allowing Luke to destroy the Death Star. Given the story of A New Hope, it was fairly predictable as far as twists/reveals go, but it was also incredibly well done, a standout moment in an immense film.
7 Obi-Wan Is Still Around After Death
As silly as they sounded to everyone in 1976 during production, when A New Hope got released in 1977, many fascinating concepts, from the Jedi and the Force to the first mention of the Clone Wars, and everything in-between, were introduced.
One of the most out-there things teased at the end was Obi-Wan being around in some way after death as he talked to Luke during the trench run. This was taken even further when he appeared as a Force ghost in The Empire Strikes Back, interacting with the physical realm from beyond.
6 The Eccentric Green Creature Is Yoda
Going back to Yoda, he is obviously an incredible character in the franchise and one of the most iconic and recognizable characters in all of cinema due to his unique look and voice.
This unique look was part of the reason that Yoda was able to convince Luke that he was not Yoda, just some random eccentric Dagobah creature. Luke’s initial judgment of Yoda helped audiences believe there was no way this small, strange being was a powerful Jedi. Alas, he proved everyone wrong by revealing himself as such.
5 Vader Has A Master
Of course, Yoda was not the only vital Star Wars character introduced in The Empire Strikes Back. Joining him was his opposite, Sheev Palpatine, a.k.a the Emperor.
There was such little information given about Vader in A New Hope; fans did not even know if there was anything under the mask; all everyone knew was that he was incredible, powerful, and scary. It was one of the biggest reveals of the trilogy when Vader got on his knee and bowed down to a master who controlled even him.
4 Luke & Leia Are Brother & Sister
One of the strangest aspects of the original trilogy in hindsight is the crush Luke clearly had on Leia for two films, as well as the kiss that the two share on Hoth during The Empire Strikes Back.
That is because, of course, the two are brother and sister. Yoda reveals that there is another when Luke leaves Dagobah for Bespin, but this seems to refer to there being another Jedi, presumably Leia. In Return of the Jedi, though, he reveals there is another Skywalker, with this being Leia, a surprising turn of events but something that works well and adds a lot to the dynamics of the heroes.
3 Obi-Wan Allows Himself To Die
Obi-Wan Kenobi never disappoints in Star Wars, and on his debut in A New Hope, he has a handful of terrific, iconic moments, not least of all his duel with Vader.
The duel itself is not that amazing; it certainly has not aged as well as others from the trilogy. But the story and emotion behind it help it, especially because it led to the death of Obi-Wan. Watching for the first time, it is definitely shocking to see Obi-Wan give up and accept death to allow the heroes to escape, even more so because his body mysteriously disappears, something that only made sense when Force ghosts became a thing.
2 Vader’s Redemption
Return of the Jedi is so often seen as the weakest movie of the original trilogy, but there is so much brilliance in it, particularly in the ending between Luke, Vader, and the Emperor.
The trilogy could have easily ended on a low note with Luke turning to the dark side, or it could have taken an easy route of Luke just kicking ass with both villains dying with the Death Star. However, the best choice was made, and Vader was redeemed, saving his son’s life and killing the Emperor, the ultimate fist-bump moment.

Some movie moments transcend the film itself and the franchise it comes from, becoming a universally known thing within the pop culture sphere, and that applies to the climax of The Empire Strikes Back.
In what is seen by many as the greatest twist in the history of film, Vader has Luke beaten and reveals to him with an iconic yet often misquoted line that he is Luke’s father. It is goosebumps-inducing and wonderfully crafted, and not just the best reveal of the original trilogy, but in all of Star Wars.
