Star Wars: The Clone Wars actor Matt Lanter promises his Anakin will return. Lanter voiced Anakin Skywalker for all seven seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He also voiced Anakin for brief moments in Star Wars: Rebels, including one pivotal moment during Ahsoka Tano’s duel with Darth Vader. There were a lot of great aspects of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but one of the best things that the show accomplished overall was fleshing out Anakin’s character from a celebrated Jedi general to a Dark Lord of the Sith.

The tragedy stemming from Anakin’s turn to the dark side was further amplified by Anakin’s relationship with his Padawan Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein.) Yoda had assigned Anakin a Padawan to help him learn how to let go of attachments. Anakin of course, became super attached to Ahsoka. Her decision to leave the Jedi Order after being framed for the bombing of the Jedi Temple was another factor in Anakin’s descent into the dark side. The final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars ended with Anakin becoming Darth Vader.

Lanter recently revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that, “[He] never quite put Anakin down.” The actor didn’t confirm exactly what that meant in terms of future Star Wars projects. However, Lanter did confirm something very exciting.

“There’s some new Lucasfilm Animation going on. I’ve been a part of some things I can’t talk about yet. You’ll see Anakin again.”

Lanter’s reveal that his Anakin would return in a future Star Wars project is fantastic. The way he spoke about how he had been a part of, “some things.” indicates that his Anakin will be heard in more than one project. The obvious choice would be The Bad Batch, a Star Wars: The Clone Wars spin-off series that follows Clone Force 99 after the events of season seven of The Clone Wars. Of course the obvious conundrum with Lanter’s return as Anakin is the same as Hayden Christensen’s return as Anakin in the live-action series, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Anakin’s story had already been put on halt with Darth Vader taking the reins (until Anakin’s Return of the Jedi redemption) by the time Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Bad Batch take place. It would make the most sense for Lanter’s Anakin to return either via a series of flashbacks or another perfectly timed crack in Darth Vader’s armor that would allow Anakin’s humanity to peer through, like his duel with Ahsoka in Star Wars: Rebels. However, that moment was so perfectly poignant it would be hard to replicate that a second time.

Of course, Lanter could return as Anakin in a completely different Star Wars project. The actor did a fantastic job voicing Anakin for all seven seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, so it would be great to have him return in any sort of capacity. The great thing about the Star Wars universe is that the sky isn’t the limit, and the galaxy of story possibilities are endless.
