The first details on Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts’ mysterious Disney+ Star Wars series have been unveiled.

Vanity Fair shared a few tidbits about the project that’s codenamed Grammar Rodeo, confirming it takes place during the period of reconstruction following the defeat of the Galactic Empire in Return of the Jedi. This is notably the same timeframe in which shows like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett take place, though the new project appears to be targeting a younger audience. Specifically, it’s described as “a galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the ’80s.” Casting is underway, with Lucasfilm, Watts and writer Chris Ford seeking four children between the ages of 11 and 12.

It was announced in February that Watts was set to helm a Star Wars series for Disney+. Two months later, it was reported that Watts had departed Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four reboot. “Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life changing experience for me,” Watts said at the time. “I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”

In addition to Grammar Rodeo, other upcoming Star Wars television projects include Season 3 of The Mandalorian, Season 2 of The Bad Batch, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, The Acolyte and Lando. There’s also apparently an animated Tales of the Jedi project in the works, though details aren’t expected to surface until Star Wars Celebration later this month.

On the film side of things, the future is less clear. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed Rian Johnson’s long-gestating trilogy is still in development, and there’s an unspecified project from Marvel Studios President/Marvel CCO Kevin Feige in the works. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is also set to helm Rogue Squadron, though that project was reportedly delayed indefinitely over creative differences in November 2021. Despite this, the film remains slated for a December 2023 release as of Disney’s last release schedule update.

Jon Watts’ yet-to-be-titled Disney+ Star Wars series has no confirmed premiere date.
