Star Wars Why Some Jedi Used Red Lightsabers

Red-bladed lightsabers are the signature weapons of the Sith in the Star Wars franchise, but some Jedi have used them too. Although the Jedi and the Sith are fundamentally different religions, each with distinctive philosophies, they share a common origin point and both use lightsabers. The meanings behind lightsaber blade colors have been gradually explored in the Star Wars franchise over time, and while both the modern canon and Legends material establish that red-bladed lightsabers are almost exclusively Sith weapons, some Jedi in both timelines break tradition and use them for a variety of reasons.

All lightsabers are powered by Force-imbued crystals. In Legends, these differently colored crystals can be found naturally or synthesized via the Force—in which case, the crystal’s color is chosen by its creator. In canon, Kyber crystals are intrinsically attuned to the Force, beginning as colorless but taking on a color upon bonding with a Force-user. A canon Kyber crystal can be nearly any color, but only becomes red when corrupted by the dark side, making it “bleed.” If a crystal is removed from a lightsaber and bonds with another Force user, it may change to a different color.

In both canon and Legends, Jedi will sometimes use red-bladed lightsabers in emergencies where they’re missing their lightsabers and a Sith weapon is the only one available. Some Jedi are explicitly shown using red lightsabers in Legends, however. This includes Adi Gallia, Even Piell, Depa Billaba, A’Sharad Hett, and even Luke Skywalker. For most of these Jedi, their use of red-bladed lightsabers is due to an accidental oversight behind the scenes, but for Hett and Skywalker, their use of the weapons is indicative of their rejection of certain Jedi traditions, as red-bladed lightsabers were not always dark side aligned in the Legends continuity.

While Jedi and Sith were relatively well-defined in the original Star Wars trilogy—though the word “Sith” only appeared in non-movie material until the prequels—it wasn’t until after the prequel trilogy began that lightsaber blade colors were retroactively given clear meanings. Before that, the assumption was that any Jedi or Sith could have any blade color, hence the variety of lightsabers among the villains of Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II and Legends-era comics giving Jedi like Luke Skywalker and Adi Gallia red-bladed weapons.

The prequel-era Jedi generally had their lightsaber blade colors retconned into their Clone Wars-era colors. Mace Windu and Plo Koon, who were originally marketed with blue and yellow lightsabers, had their weapons changed to purple and blue, respectively. Adi Gallia, Even Piell, A’Sharad Hett, and Depa Billaba all had their red-bladed lightsabers retroactively changed to the more traditional blue or green in early 2000s Legends comics to coincide with the newly-established lore. Luke Skywalker, however, retained his red blade well after the color was officially associated with the Sith.

In Marvel’s classic Star Wars comics, Luke built a shoto (short lightsaber) within a day to aid him in combating the Dark Lady of the Sith, Lumiya. Like Luke’s iconic green-bladed lightsaber, the shoto presumably used a synthesized lightsaber crystal, and while there is no in-universe explanation for its red blade, one can be extrapolated. Synthetic crystals typically became red, but Luke took his time building his original weapon, slowly crafting his first crystal, resulting in a green gem. Perhaps Luke’s backup shoto had a red crystal due to the rushed and hasty nature of its construction. Whatever the case, Luke’s secondary lightsaber was a Force-aligned weapon of a Jedi Knight, despite its red blade being atypical in the Star Wars franchise.
