Star Wars Why The Next Game Should Focus On Bounty Hunters (& Why The Force Needs Another Shot First)

It’s an exciting time again to be a Star Wars fan, with the franchise successfully going through a redemption arc through the live-action TV space provided by Disney+. The High Republic is going through a publishing campaign, and even bigger is the recent developments coming from the video game department. It’s been reported that EA is finally losing their exclusive publishing deal, with other publishers and developers getting their chances to have a go at the license.

They’ll make more and, in all fairness, they’ve recently released two critically and commercially successful games and turned a former critical dud into a critical success, but variety is needed. With the prospect of getting Star Wars games more frequently, bounty hunters and other takes on Force-focused games could be on the table.

10 Bounty Hunters: Spiritual Revival Of 1313

One of the casualties of Disney’s acquisition of the Star Wars IP and the breaking down of LucasArts was a game titled Star Wars 1313. The game got an E3 reveal, trailer, and gameplay look, though it was scrapped in part given the license hand-off. It’s a shame, because the concept of the game was a story-driven, Uncharted-like third-person, action-adventure game about Coruscant’s criminal underworld, focusing on Boba Fett.

The grittier nature of the premise seemed like a refreshing take on Star Wars storytelling as fans are typically used to, and the next game being a bounty hunter one could be 1313’s spiritual revival.

9 The Force: Different Publisher’s/Developer’s Take On Jedi

Star Wars Why The Next Game Should Focus On Bounty Hunters (& Why The Force Needs Another Shot First)

We’ve gotten one triple-A Star Wars game recently that finally brought fans a single-player, story-driven game that focused on the Jedi and lightsaber combat in the form of EA and Respawn’s Jedi: Fallen Order. Thankfully, that’s one of the success stories of EA’s tenure with the exclusive access to the license in gaming, but with the shackles off, a new publisher/developer take on the concept could be welcome.

The Jedi are one of the selling points of the franchise, as they’re essentially space wizards with psychic powers and laser swords, but a new studio tackling the rich, vast lore of the Jedi and galaxy at large would be enticing. Plus, it’d be interesting to see other twists to gameplay mechanics in combat be used.

8 Bounty Hunters: Capitalize On The Mandalorian

Perhaps the most blatant reason for the next game deserving to be centered on bounty hunting is the resounding critical acclaim of The Mandalorian on Disney+. The game doesn’t necessarily need to be about Din Djarin or Mandalorians in general, but the successful execution of the concept on live-action TV seems like it could easily be a winner in a video game.

As long as the game is handled with care, it’ll sell gangbusters not just because of the power behind the Star Wars brand, but with the added boon of The Mandalorian’s praises. Given fans first see Din in season one as a full-grown man, a game focusing on his days prior to the events of the show could be done if Lucasfilm Games and the publisher/developer want it.

7 The Force: KotOR Remake

This is one of the reports and rumors circulating online as of late, and it’s perhaps the most compelling news on the Star Wars front in gaming. It’s being suggested that Aspyr Media is expanding its team, including ex-BioWare devs, and in charge of a triple-A RPG with a budget of around $70 million, and that it’s a licensed project.

Insiders have been pointing at the coveted Knights of the Old Republic being said project, and if this pans out, it’ll surely be high on fans’ priority list. The originals have been acclaimed as the best games in the franchise and some of the best RPGs ever made. A high-budget remake could prove superb, and it would finally give fans another Star Wars RPG.

6 Bounty Hunters: Already Plenty Of The Force

A simple reason for shifting focus for the next game to tackle bounty hunters is that the Force is already an incredibly prominent aspect of the franchise across the board. It’s perfectly understandable, but this universe is a grand-scale sci-fi fantasy with boundless possibilities, so making something out of the bounty hunting concept would be a refreshing change of pace.

Whether the next game is focused on aspects of the Force or not, it’s without a doubt going to be the foundation of another game at some point. Potential developers may as well use this exciting premise as a palette cleanser to bring in some aforementioned variety.

5 The Force: Focusing On The Dark Side/Sith

While the Jedi are typically the franchise’s protagonists, the Sith, while thoroughly on the Dark Side of the Force, is one side of the same coin as their Light-side counterparts. Granted, the reported Knights of the Old Republic remake may allow players to play as a Sith lord since the originals allowed for a morality system to let the character choose a side, but a game solely dedicated to the player character being a Sith would surely change things up.

Even if it’s still the Force and lightsabers in the end, an action-adventure Star Wars game in a similar style to Fallen Order with a Sith/Dark-side user would be intriguing. It could be fascinating from a narrative perspective as well.

4 Bounty Hunters: New Spin On Third-Person Shooters, Action-Adventures

Bounty hunting in a game would definitely invoke the third-person shooter action-adventure game genre, though given the sandbox this franchise offers creatives to play with, it could be more. The pitfall of making a game of this genre is churning out another cover-shooter clone, but with a Star Wars skin.

Likewise, making a third-person shooter that easily lets the player go guns blazing, melting enemies with little effort or thought would also be a waste. The sci-fi elements at play give a huge opportunity to play with tech and weapon-crafting mechanics and traversal (e.g. jetpacks), which could offer more verticality in environments.

3 The Force: Fallen Order Sequel

While referencing Jedi: Fallen Order, a sequel is also something that seems inevitable for EA/Respawn in the future. Fallen Order was a critical success from the get-go, thankfully, and proved a good story-focused experience many Star Wars fans were growing more and more frustrated in waiting for–and understandably so.

Should a sequel continue to build off the foundation of goodwill and effective gameplay and narrative components to craft an even-better project going forward, it surely wouldn’t generally disappoint fans. Especially so since more–and different–will likely be on the way in the future.

2 Bounty Hunters: Ubisoft & Massive Entertainment’s Game

Before the KotOR remake reports started to gain traction, Ubisoft through Massive Entertainment revealed they’re working on an open-world, story-driven Star Wars game. While running from EA and into Ubisoft can be like escaping a bear trap and running into another one depending on how the latter’s game turns out, the fact there’s competition now and Massive’s base concept for it could turn out well for a bounty hunter-themed game.

Massive are responsible for The Division games, and while they had a rocky start, the story-driven promise coupled with open-world could help a hypothetical bounty hunter game differentiate itself from other third-person shooting games. Focusing on single-player and building dense, vertical open worlds makes for a great basis for a character taking on a main story and “bounty” side quests akin to The Witcher 3.

1 The Force: The High Republic

The High Republic is another chance ripe for the taking, as it has–in part–already expanded beyond books. One of the many Disney+ shows set for premiere is The Acolyte, which takes place in the waning days of the High Republic. This era presents an opportunity similar to the Old Republic for a Force/Jedi-focused game.

The High Republic is an age where the Jedi were in a galactic renaissance in power and influence, and its groundwork has already been set. With it taking place 200 years before the Skywalker Saga, there should be plenty of room for a game.
