The Star Wars franchise is expanding even further as Disney revealed their Investor’s Day announcements and the acclaimed The Mandalorian closed its second season. Taking cues from Kevin Feige’s MCU formula when it comes to creating a closely interconnected cinematic universe, Lucasfilm is applying it now to live-action TV–a new frontier for the franchise and a slew of exciting plot developments are being set up in The Mandalorian and its direct spinoffs.

Episode five of season two saw the thrilling debut of Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka and Thrawn is heavily suggested for live-action. A fan-favorite villain brought back from the realm of “Legends” and into the canon, his involvement in live-action is tantalizing, but with the possibilities provided with this soon-to-be interconnected universe, where should Thrawn make his initial and/or most crucial appearances?

10 The Mandalorian: Longevity For The Story

The start of the series through the end of the second season was firmly built on the premise of Din Djarin discovering and embarking on the journey of returning Grogu with Force-sensitives like him. Those being the Jedi, this arc was obviously fulfilled with the incredible–and shocking–appearance of a still-young, post-RotJ, Luke Skywalker.

Moff Gideon’s actor, Giancarlo Esposito, slipped over the summer that the show would be planned for at least four seasons, with the Empire skeleton-crew leader allegedly getting more development, so perhaps adding Thrawn to the mix, at least initially, in a future season of The Mandalorian would help keep the interest in the show high for two or more seasons.

9 Ahsoka: He’s More Tied To Her

An obvious choice for why Grand Admiral Thrawn should make a significant bulk of his appearances here is because, since his return to canon was anchored in the Rebels animated series, his ties to Ahsoka are closer. The impact of him being a significant focal point in The Mandalorian as his live-action debut would lessen the emotional impact of Thrawn debuting in Ahsoka.

Naturally, that’s due to Din having no prior connection to the Chiss mastermind, and with the Mandalorian as the main protagonist, it wouldn’t feel as significant. Having Thrawn’s first live-action scene be confronting Ahsoka in her series would be a massively-exciting opportunity.

8 The Mandalorian: A Cameo Scene

As mentioned, Lucasfilm is clearly taking a new approach to Star Wars going forward while the oversaturation of theatrical releases cools down–especially after the letdown of The Rise of Skywalker–by doing their own version of the MCU in live-action TV. The lift-off has certainly worked wonders, with The Mandalorian being critically acclaimed so far in its two seasons, so it becomes even more suggestive that Thrawn is meant to be the Thanos of this corner of the Star Wars universe.

Therefore, Thrawn could get a teased appearance in the form of a cameo in an upcoming season–should season three release before Ahsoka. Thanos’ brief cameos elsewhere in the MCU didn’t dampen his role in Infinity War or Endgame.

7 Ahsoka: Thrawn Means Ezra

Like how Thrawn is more connected to Ahsoka due to the former’s biggest role upon reintroduction into the canon, the Grand Admiral also has deeper ties to Ezra Bridger. Subsequently, Ahsoka’s relationship to the young Jedi in Rebels is also close, as the suggested reason for the former looking so intensely for Thrawn is to hopefully find Ezra–alive.

Having his first live-action appearance be in Ahsoka would be more narratively fitting and meaningful since finding Thrawn would likely also mean seeing a potential live-action Ezra for the first time. It’d also be a great jumping-off point for Ezra to play a significant role beyond Ahsoka into the eventual crossover event with The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Rangers of the New Republic.

6 The Mandalorian: Bo-Katan Kryze & Din Djarin Vs. Thrawn

While at least season three of The Mandalorian looks to firmly set the conflict between Bo-Katan Kryze and Din Djarin over the Darksaber and who rules over Mandalore and the plot’s foundation, introducing Grand Admiral Thrawn part-way through could present an interesting story point.

Din made clear to Bo-Katan that he has no interest in being a ruler with the Darksaber, but Mandalorian tradition dictates that the lightsaber must be won over in combat. Thrawn could prove to be the eventual wrench in that conflict, forcing the two–or at least Bo-Katan–to fight a common enemy for the greater good. From here, his role in Ahsoka and the crossover event could be fleshed out.

5 Ahsoka: Ruler Of Mandalore And Wielder Of The Darksaber Is Enough

On the other hand, the aforementioned plot points of Din and Bo-Katan’s conflict over the Darksaber and who takes the throne of Mandalore are more than enough as the core premise of season three. Not to mention what’s potentially to become of Moff Gideon.

Ahsoka is confirmed by Disney and Lucasfilm to be a limited series, so it’s a single, one-and-done season. Therefore, it only has that one season to have a compelling core plot, and having Grand Admiral Thrawn be the main antagonist of that plot makes more sense than adding him to the mix of narratives and characters in The Mandalorian.

4 The Mandalorian: The Final Antagonist

Having Thrawn be the final antagonist in The Mandalorian could be a fitting sendoff for the character and the show since this series is essentially the Disney+ flagship in terms of original programming. There’s clearly plenty of Star Wars to go around in the coming years across TV and movies, though especially the former, so it’d make sense if The Mandalorian is the first of however many multi-season shows Lucasfilm has planned to come to a close.

With that final season, Thrawn’s most crucial role to play in this mini cinematic universe should be reserved for then. The Endgame outline here for the Grand Admiral has the potential for a fantastic payoff.

3 Ahsoka: The Jumping-Off Point

A way to get the best of both worlds with the previous point is by having Thrawn have two important, season-long roles as a main villain. In this case, the first could be throughout Ahsoka, as her purpose revealed in season two, episode five makes the Chiss ripe for usage in her limited series.

After however Ahsoka resolves itself, the next time we’d see him would be as the final antagonist in a final season of The Mandalorian. Ahsoka would ideally foreshadow this in its last episode and would serve as the Infinity War with Thanos for these three interconnected Star Wars shows.

2 The Mandalorian: Moff Gideon & Thrawn

Something else that could be exciting, particularly if done in The Mandalorian, would be having a Grand Admiral Thrawn and Moff Gideon dynamic. Since Esposito suggested that Gideon is to get more character development in a third and fourth season of The Mandalorian, having the two meet and interact could make for a thrilling plot device and daunting proposition for Din and company to tackle.

Given Thrawn’s thoroughly-calculated, strategic nature, it could be interesting to see him completely deceive and manipulate Gideon for whatever his grander potential scheme is. Having them ultimately turn on each other could also add to a thickening plot.

1 Ahsoka: Better Chance For Character Development

To complement the last point in favor of Ahsoka, on top of being the best order of events in giving the protagonists of Ahsoka and The Mandalorian a formidable villain to anchor their respective plots, Thrawn’s first crucial appearance being in the former instead of the latter would be best to do justice to him first and foremost.

Getting to see Thrawn in live-action is something not many would have thought too possible not long ago, and adding him in brings high expectations. The creative team must be careful to not make him a simple narrative device for moving the story along more than an engrossing character in his own right. Appearing first in Ahsoka would likely give him more focus and a proper first arc.
