Star Wars Writer Talks The Return of Sabe The Queens Shadow

Padmé Naberrie Amidala is an incredible character within the Star Wars universe, first being introduced as the 14-year-old ruler of her home planet of Naboo. While under an unlawful occupation by the Trade Federation, Queen Amidala managed to liberate her home world thanks to the aid of two Jedi Knights, and a young slave boy from the desert planet of Tatooine, as seen in the first episode of the Skywalker Saga, The Phantom Menace. However, fans know that her story doesn’t end there by a long shot, but neither does it end for her loyal handmaidens, especially for her primary and most trusted handmaiden, Sabé, the Queen’s Shadow. Sabé has recently made a return to the Star Wars universe after the events of Empire Strikes Back, as seen in the recent Darth Vader comics series from writer Greg Pak. At the Lucasfilm Publishing SDCC@Home panel, Pak went into detail about why he brought her back for his first story arc.

After the events of The Phantom Menace, there is a ten year jump to the next episode, Attack of the Clones. At the start of that film, it’s revealed that Padmé is now the senator of Naboo, and she remains as such throughout the duration of The Clone Wars until her death at the hands of her husband Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith, who had fallen to the dark side in fear of losing her, and inadvertently killed her in his anger. Anakin would go on to become Darth Vader at the birth of the Galactic Empire, not knowing that Padmé lived on long enough to give birth to their two children.

Jumping forward further past A New Hope to the events of Empire Strikes Back, and fans know that Vader learned of his son Luke, and tried to turn him to the dark side. When Luke refused and escaped his grasp, Vader determined to seek out the truth and specifics of his late wife’s final moments, putting him face to face with Sabé, the Queen’s Shadow, who was once Padmé’s close confidant and decoy in times on danger. Due to Sabé not knowing Vader’s true identity, she agrees to an uneasy alliance with the Dark Lord in search of the truth.

At the Lucasfilm Publishing panel, Darth Vader writer Greg Pak went into detail as to why it was so important to bring back Sabé, especially with a story arc that deals so much with Vader’s (and Anakin’s) past with his wife:

“When we got the green light to use Sabé, it was amazing. Vader’s whole emotional life turns on these key relationships, and one of them is Padmé, and in the prequels, the whole way he’s tempted to the dark side is his love for Padmé and his desire to save her life. So to not refer to Padmé in this story would be a huge mistake. However, In this storyline, Padmé is central but she’s not here…but Sabé is. There were all of these handmaids who looked like her, who were trained to know her mannerisms, who were devoted to her, and they’re still around. So to use them in this story and see how they react to Vader, and how Vader reacts to them is tremendous.”

It’s a great benefit to see a character like Sabé interact with Vader, seeing as how she looks so much like Vader’s lost love. The emotional turmoil within Vader that is felt within the pages of this current arc is palpable, even with Vader’s seemingly emotionless helmeted mask.

Pak also gives a nod and shoutout to E.K Johnston, a fellow Star Wars writer who wrote the novel, Queen’s Shadow, which takes a deep dive into Padmé and Sabé’s relationship and work after Padmé’s term as queen ends, four years after Episode 1. She also just recently released the novel Queen’s Peril earlier this year, which looks into Queen Amidala and her court just before the events of The Phantom Menace. Pak shared that Queen’s Shadow was a big help to him and that Johnston herself was a great support as he was working on fleshing out Sabé’s return to Star Wars, and it seems as though that work has paid off. The first three issues of Darth Vader are absolutely incredible, with more issues to come. Queen’s Shadow and Queen’s Peril are also available now.
