According to Stardew Valley developer Eric Barone, who some players may know better as ConcernedApe, the indie farming simulator that became a household name in 2016 just broke its own congruent player record with more than 90,000 fans jumping into the game all at once on Steam. This follows in the wake of the PC version receiving the game’s 1.5 update, the launch of which was a pleasant end of the year treat for many fans.

The update was considerably large in scope, especially for a nearly five-year old game. It added things like new locations, NPCs – including Leo who came bundled with an entire, unique story to explore – and an array of fresh enemies to fight. The new locations in Stardew Valley range from a beach farm map which allow players to harvest the fruits of the sea to an entire new region called Ginger Island. However, console fans of the game are still awaiting these changes, which Barone has suggested could come before the end of the month. With all of this to explore, players have been flocking back to the game in droves, hoping to see all the new sights and helping to break Stardew Valley’s previous records.

As noted in the final section of a post by Eric Barone on the game’s 1.5.2 patch, Stardew Valley has surpassed its previous record on Steam and hosted an impressive 94,879 players at one time. The developer’s commentary was short and sweet, merely observing that this recent record-breaking number of in-game players was, “Pretty cool.” The larger text was concerned with various fixes and changes that he had made to the game and was dotted with redacted-looking text to accommodate fans that might want to read the notes but not be spoiled by certain elements. Mostly, it seems that this list simply contained details of smaller adjustments and fixes.

While Stardew Valley was certainly popular during its initial release, it looks like the game will be joining the ranks of several others which attained or significantly increased in popularity several years after launch. One of these titles, Rust, a game that originally released in 2013, also recently beat its own player records, which helped the game’s developers earn $1 million not once, but twice this week. Of course, one of the biggest game resurgences of 2020 was the reemergence of Among Us. InnerSloth, the team behind the hit indie game which launched two years ago, recently released a picture showing off how far the team, and the game, had come since its early days. The image showcases an early draft of the of the Mira HQ map which had been drawn on a whiteboard.

It is great to see these indie games like Stardew Valley getting unexpected, record-breaking player surges even years after their original release. With the game’s 1.5 update hitting consoles sometime in the near future, hopefully Barone will be able to report similar numbers for that demographic soon.
