Stardew Valley Farming Sim Mechanics That Still Need To Be Added

Since its original release, Stardew Valley has continued to expand content with free updates. New farm maps, character romances, crop types, and locations have been added to improve both first-time player experiences and long-term playability. While these updates have done a great job of offering more to do in the pixelated, farming simulation game, there are still many aspects of Stardew Valley that could be improved on in future updates.

One of the best things about Stardew Valley as a farming sim is its expanse of options. Players can customize most of their farmland to any design they like, grow crops from a wide variety of seeds, and process goods into numerous products. However, the number of animal species players can own and care for have remained surprisingly basic. In recent farming simulation games like Story of Seasons and Harvest Moon, expanding animal options has been a big focus, and allows players to own different varieties of cows, chickens, and sheep among other more exotic options.

An update to expand the available livestock species in Stardew Valley could also come with an overhaul to breeding mechanics. Currently, breeding is done to obtain more animals at a lower cost than purchasing from Marnie at her shop. However, adding genetics that can only be obtained through breeding would make the effort and wait more valuable to players. Stardew Valley’s livestock could earn a new trait for every generation they’ve been bred down. These could include a higher product drop, a new level of product quality, gold products, or rare drops only obtainable from bred animals.

Stardew Valley Needs More Animals & Livestock Options

Any update of this sort could also contain endgame legendary animals. For example, breeding a horse and talking to the Wizard Rasmodius on the same day could allow players to breed a unicorn. Or, Stardew Valley’s Dinosaur Egg could have a small chance of being zapped by a witch in the night and producing a dragon. Players could also have a rare chance of finding an egg containing a mythical monster while exploring locations like Stardew Valley’s Skull Cavern, adding new reasons to delve deep into the caves. Each of these animals could drop items like Dragon Scales and Unicorn Hairs, which could be used in crafting or sold for a higher price than other rare animal drops.

Stardew Valley could also use an update expanding forageable items. While there are a good number of options currently available, these can become boring and repetitive by year three. New items could be added with a lower spawn rate, like golden ferns that give a huge boost to health and stamina when exploring, or golden berry bushes that could have similar effects. These forageable items could be used in new cooking recipes that offer big buffs, helping those enjoying Stardew Valley’s endgame content explore longer and more efficiently than is possible with items currently available in the game.
