Stargirl Secretly Hinted Another Justice Society Member Is Still Alive

WARNING: This post contains spoilers for Stargirl season 2, episode 3.

Stargirl season 2 may be setting up the return of Doctor Mid-Nite, one of the original members of the Justice Society of America. As seen in the pilot episode, Doctor Mid-Nite, a.k.a. Charles McNider, was killed alongside the rest of the Justice Society during the battle with their archenemies, the Injustice Society. Ever since, McNider has lived on through his AI installed within his goggles, which he programmed with his voice.

Originally, it was thought that all of the official Justice Society heroes had been murdered ten years ago. As a result of the showdown that happened between the two teams, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Starman, Doctor Mid-Nite, Wildcat, Johnny Thunder, the Flash, Green Lantern, Sandman, and Doctor Fate were believed to be dead. A few months later, Hourman joined the list of casualties when he and his wife were attacked on the road by Solomon Grundy. Starman’s sidekick, Pat Dugan, was thought to be the only survivor. But the Stargirl season 1 finale threw a wrench into this idea when it featured a shocking guest appearance from Joel McHale’s Starman. Though his body was shown, he somehow still appears to be alive.

Starman may not be the only original JSA hero to still be among the living, however. In the pilot episode, the Shade used his powers to drag off Doctor Mid-Nite and presumably killed him. But now, Stargirl is calling this event into question. In Stargirl season 2, episode 3, Beth (Angelika Washington) accused the Shade (Jonathan Cake) of killing McNider, prompting Shade to say, “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Right away, this line makes it clear that Mid-Nite’s fate may not be what it initially appeared to be. Of course, what it may mean is that a different Injustice Society villain killed him after Shade grabbed him. However, it could be a hint that Charles McNider is somehow still alive.

Doctor Mid-Nite not being dead would have all sorts of implications for season 2. First of all, it would reinforce the notion that Stargirl’s Shade isn’t a true villain. Instead, he could emerge as an ally against Stargirl villain Eclipso, which does seem to be the direction the show is taking with his character. Mid-Nite’s return could easily be linked to his Eclipso connection, as was revealed in the season 2 premiere that one of Eclipso’s victims shared his surname. Mid-Nite’s survival would also be a game-changer for Beth, who was devastated by the loss of “Chuck.” McNider returning rather than Chuck being rebooted would give her an opportunity to interact with the real Doctor Mid-Nite for the first time. There’s also the matter of McNider’s owl. According to Pat, the owl has been waiting at the JSA headquarters for him to come back this entire time. It could be that the owl secretly knows that its master is still around.

Similar to the situation with Starman, a big Doctor Mid-Nite reveal would raise questions about where he’s been all this time. One possibility is that he went into isolation following the deaths of his teammates. A more interesting scenario relates to the comics and how Shade’s powers work. At one point in his life, an accident caused his body to merge with fellow villain Simon Culp. Unbeknownst to Shade at first, Culp slowly began to take over. If something similar happened in Stargirl during the Doctor Mid-Nite fight, Charles McNider could be trapped within the Shade. If so, that could explain why the Shade left the Injustice Society: McNider’s consciousness could be affecting his decision-making in a positive way.
