After making his screen debut in John Hughes’ 1991 movie Curly Sue, Steve Carell has slowly but surely become one of the most popular actors on the planet. In addition to being recognized as one of the funniest contemporary comedians through the NBC hit TV series The Office, Carell has also proven his dramatic acting skills over the past two decades or so.

In 2006, Carell took on his first real dramatic role with the must-see coming-of-age tale, Little Miss Sunshine. While still showcasing his comedic brilliance, Carell continues to deliver a number of diverse dramatic characters in some of the most well-reviewed movies of recent years.

10 Andy Stitzer – The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

There isn’t a single mean bone to be found in Andy Stitzer’s body, the lonesome and longing central figure in Carell’s breakout hit The 40-Year-Old Virgin. In fact, Andy is so nice that he famously stated, “You know what? I respect women! I love women! I respect them so much I completely stay away from them.”

While Andy is the obvious butt of one long-running joke, things change when he eventually meets a suitable partner in Trish (Catherine Keener), and he exhibits an extremely caring and gentle demeanor en route to falling in love.

9 Mark Hogancamp – Welcome To Marwen (2018)

Although he can’t always suppress his PTSD-fueled demons, Mark Hogancamp is simply one of the sweetest souls Carell has ever played on screen.

Upon being beaten and left for dead by five attackers, Mark Hogancamp is left with severe brain damage. In an attempt to recall his past, he builds an entire world out of plastic WWII figurines, into which he plunges with childlike exuberance.

8 Brick Tamland – Anchorman (2004)

Brick Tamland is one weird weatherman, but nobody could confuse him for being a genuinely mean person. He does have angry outbursts from time to time, but he’s rarely cruel to anyone other than himself.

And although he is prone to blurting out the occasional non-sequitur, Brick is a good-hearted person. For example, at one point he says, “I am Brick Tamland. People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice-cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.” This is one of Carell’s best roles, to date.

7 David Sheff – Beautiful Boy (2018)

In one of his most nuanced turns to date, Carell balanced the compassionate support of a loving father and the tough-love of a concerned parent in Beautiful Boy.

Based on the bestselling father/son memoirs Tweak and Beautiful Boy, the true story traces the crippling drug addiction of Nic Sheff (Timothee Chalamet in one of his best roles). Carell plays Nic’s father, David, who is willing to do anything to help his son kick his deadly habit and find a path of righteousness.

6 Bobby Riggs – Battle Of The Sexes (2017)

Carell nabbed his ninth and most recent Golden Globe nod for his role as real-life Tennis champion Bobby Riggs in The Battle of the Sexes. The Jonathan Dayton/Valerie Faris film recreates the iconic 1973 tennis match between Riggs and number one ranked female player, Billie Jean King (Emma Stone).

Because of Riggs’ hilariously oversized personality, he is prone to show off his hot-temper when losing tennis matches or when battling his gambling addiction.

5 Mark Baum – The Big Short (2015)

In yet another character based on a real-life person, Carell’s depiction of Mark Baum (changed from Steve Eisman) in The Big Short shows a man supremely irate and disgusted with the American banking system.

Baum’s grumpy comportment as the head of trading firm FrontPoint Partners often comes with comedic outbursts, but he’s a generally cutthroat corporate type with little patience and even less urbanity. Carell earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in the film.

4 Frank Ginsburg – Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

In his first real dramatic performance on the big screen, Carell toed the line between a self-defeated professor with suicidal tendencies and an extremely compassionate family member in Little Miss Sunshine.

Frank Ginsburg (Carell) is a suicidally depressed teacher whose sister Sheryl (Toni Collette) invites him to live with her family after she picks him up from the hospital. Despite constantly bickering with Sheryl’s husband, Richard (Greg Kinnear), he shows heart-shattering kindness to his niece, Olive (Abigail Breslin), to make her feel included and accepted on a beauty pageant stage.

3 Trent – The Way, Way Back (2013)

In one of the first instances playing against his comedic type since Little Miss Sunshine, Carell demonstrated a level of strict surliness in the 2013 coming-of-age film, The Way, Way Back.

The story tracks Duncan (Liam James), an awkward 14-year-old sent to live with his mother in her boyfriend’s beach house for summer vacation. Said boyfriend is Trent (Carell), the attitudinal jerk who tries to mold Duncan into something he’s not. As the two butt heads over the summer, Duncan vows to become the opposite of Trent.

2 Felonius Gru – Despicable Me Series

Although his meddling minions do their darndest to soften him up, nothing changes the fact that Felonious Gru (Carell) was a world-class supervillain hell-bent on global dominance. Having played Gru four times, it’s one of Carell’s best roles of all.

Moreover, even when his domestic life mollifies his meanness, Gru still employs the sinister scientist Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand). Carell’s trademark humor is used to create a character that has one of the coldest and cruelest pasts but evolves to become more of a loving father figure.

1 John Du Pont – Foxcatcher (2014)

In his lone Oscar-nominated turn to date, Carell tapped into the inner-evil of John Dupont, the wealthy heir whose unstable mental state led to his death and destruction in 1996.

Foxcatcher focuses on Mark (Channing Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), two siblings and Olympic wrestling hopefuls who agree to allow John du Pont to coach them, despite his lack of experience. Du Pont is such a chillingly vile character that he resorts to murder in his grand quest for societal respect.
