After 7 years, a movie, and over 160 episodes, Steven Universe has finally concluded with its epilogue series, Steven Universe Future. A thrilling and heartwarming 20-episode long story, almost every main and supporting character was accounted for in Future.

Steven Universe Future had the important task of finishing several plot threads established by the original show. Not only Steven’s story, but his friends and also enemies had to have their stories completed to further provide a satisfying finale. Fortunately, Future delivers and extends many characters’ arcs. Some do have worse things happen to them than others, but the crew behind the show makes them flow organically.

10 Jasper: Shattered

One of the hardest-hitting moments in Future is when Steven accidentally shatters Jasper. Even though Steven is able to bring her back to life, Jasper still hasn’t healed psychologically. Being shattered by Steven made her develop an ominous respect for him. She even wanted to serve and follow him, not entirely unlike Pearls and Diamonds.

When Steven rejects her, it defeats her newfound sense of purpose. Before she didn’t know what to do with her life, and when she thinks she’s found something, it’s ripped apart from her not even two minutes later. She’s thankfully alive, but she’s worse off than she was before.

9 Steven: Becoming A Monster

It’s been established in Steven Universe that Steven’s physical form reflects his state of mind. If he feels older, his body will grow to adjust accordingly, as seen in the season one episode “So Many Birthdays.” Since Steven begins to feel like a monster at the end of the Future episode “Everything’s Fine”, he becomes one.

Steven becoming a huge monster was the result of him keeping his feelings inside. If he’d told his family how he was feeling, maybe things would have turned out different. This is a bad thing to happen to Steven, but it could be argued as good, considering it leads to him receiving help.

8 Greg: Hair Cut Off

Greg may be bald at the top of his head, but the bottom half has always been flowing with hair. It might not be curly or pink like Rose’s, but it’s still an impressive set of hair. Or, at least it was, since he cut it off to escape an enemy fusion in the Future episode “Bluebird.”

Greg cutting off his hair was bad for his established image, but it was good for his development moving forward. Greg has never been one to stay in one place for too long and is always trying to continue his story. His new hairstyle marks a new beginning, and perhaps a new journey entirely.

7 Lapis: Meeting Other Lapis Lazuli’s

Among the most complex characters of Steven Universe, Lapis Lazuli is certainly high on the list. She was trapped in a mirror for years, then trapped in an abusive fusion with Jasper. Being a character who was tormented for so long, it makes sense that she would want to make others feel the way she does.

Fortunately, meeting other Lapis Lazuli’s in the Future episode “Why So Blue?” shows her how harmful this can be. Because of them, she learns that true strength is restraint rather than hurting people just because you can. This episode brings a fulfilling end to Lapis’s arc.

6 Spinel: Finding Love

One of Spinel’s songs in Steven Universe: The Movie, besides “Other Friends” and “Drift Away,” is a song called “Found” that she sings with Steven. She sings about how even though Pink Diamond left her alone for thousands of years, it doesn’t mean she can’t love anyone else ever again.

The start of her new love with the Diamonds is shown at the end of the movie and it is explored further in the Future episode called “Homeworld Bound.” Once she was cold and afraid of being abandoned again. Now, because of the Diamonds, she’s able to assuage her trust issues.

5 Bismuth: The Roller Rink

Along with Pearl and Garnet, Bismuth was part of the original Crystal Gems team. She fought alongside Rose Quartz to save the world. So now that their mission is complete, what’s next for her? Besides teaching at Little Homeschool, Bismuth has also taken an interest in Pearl.

In the episode “Bismuth Casual,” Pearl takes Bismuth to a roller rink to gain more human relations. While this helps her get to know the people of Beach City more, it also helps her get closer to Pearl. After so many years of war and fighting, it’s nice that she found happiness in one of the few people who was with her all along.

4 Peridot: Camp Pining Hearts Reboot

In the episode “In Dreams,” Peridot comes over to Steven’s house to watch a reboot of her favorite television series, Camp Pining Hearts. When they watch the reboot, it disappoints them so they decide to reboot the reboot themselves. This takes a toll on Steven, but he keeps it secret until he no longer can.

This is a good thing to happen to Peridot because when she learns how distressed Steven’s been, she apologizes and promises to be there for him. She realizes she can hang out with Steven without having to fix anything, which is a long way from her first appearance. She owes a big part of this realization to Camp Pining Hearts.

3 Pearl: Pink Pearl

It seemed as though Pearl had completed all her development by the end of Steven Universe. She’d finally learned to stop devoting herself to and fighting for other people and to fight for herself. But in talking with Pink Pearl in the episode “Volleyball,” it was revealed that she still had more to learn.

Pink Pearl explains that Pink Diamond was the cause of her fractured eye, but Pearl doesn’t believe her initially. She didn’t believe Pink could be capable of such destruction and was still making excuses for her. Through talking with Pink Pearl, Pearl learned that she still had more room to grow in accepting Rose’s true nature.

2 Amethyst: Helping Other Gems

When Amethyst was first introduced in Steven Universe, she was unsure of who she was and constantly doubted herself. That all changed in the episode “Guidance,” where she helps other gems get adjusted to their new lives in Beach City.

Amethyst says that this was her purpose, helping gems figure out who they had to be just like she had to. Helping people learn what she had to learn throughout the series is a great way for her arc to come full circle.

1 Steven: His Friends Leaving

Steven may have one of the worst things happen to him in Future, but he also has one of the best. Throughout Future, Steven was so set on staying in Beach City that he was upset that Lars, Sadie, Connie, and many of his other friends were leaving. But what he didn’t know was that they had to leave in order to grow.

Steven’s friends leaving turned out to be one of the best things to happen to him in Future. It taught him that he doesn’t have to stay in one place to grow and that he could even leave to learn more about himself. It was a beautiful realization for him that gave him a fitting end.
