Steven Universe The Movies Ending Explained

Here’s the ending of Steven Universe: The Movie explained. Animated musical series Steven Universe started airing on Cartoon Network in 2013 and the fifth and final season wrapped up in 2019. Created by Rebecca Sugar, this coming-of-age show tells the tale of its titular character – a boy who is half-human, half-Gem (a race of alien beings) – who protects the universe from nefarious forces together with his Gem friends Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl (AKA the Crystal Gems). The series is a milestone in animated broadcasting, being the first Cartoon Network show created solely by a woman and the first animated series bestowed with a GLAAD Media Award thanks to its representation of LGBTQ themes.

A follow-up, feature-length film – aptly titled Steven Universe: The Movie – continued the adventures of Steven and pals. It picks up two years after the Steven Universe series finale left off and sees Steven leaving the Gem home planet despite the Diamonds’ insistence he stay and be their leader. Hoping to achieve a peaceful happy ending, Steven refuses and returns to Earth with his fellow Crystal Gems. Before long, however, Steven and the Crystal Gems find themselves battling a brand-new threat in the form of Spinel – a Gem hellbent on destroying Planet Earth and everyone on it.

Spinel brings with her a scythe-like weapon called the “Rejuvenator” which has the power to revert rebellious Gems back to their original, default states. Spinel uses the Rejuvenator on Steven and the other Crystal Gems before Steven manages to turn the weapon on Spinel herself. This results in the pure Gems basically losing all their memories and powers, though Steven retains some of his thanks to being half-human. The bulk of Steven Universe: The Movie then follows Steven as he tries to recover the memories and powers of himself, the Crystal Gems and Spinel.

Along the way, he learns Spinel was a friend of his mother Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz that she abandoned for Earth thousands of years ago, hence Spinel’s vendetta. At the end of Steven Universe: The Movie – after restoring Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl’s memories – Steven realizes the reason his own powers haven’t come back is that he’s too focused on his own happy ending, neglecting the fact he’ll always have work to do as a Crystal Gem. This allows Steven to convince Spinel that she can change too, who admits she hates what she’s become and eventually finds peace with the Diamonds back on their home planet.

While the main message and ending of Steven Universe: The Movie is all about accepting that change is inevitable and necessary for growth, it also serves as a set-up for the limited sequel series Steven Universe Future. Set after the events of Steven Universe: The Movie, the show follows Steven and his fellow Crystal Gems as they establish a settlement on Earth where humans and Gems live in harmony.
