Steven Yeun’s face and voice are all over TV and film. A South Korean-born actor who grew up in Michigan, Yeun is best known for his role as Glenn Rhee in The Walking Dead. Yeun seems drawn to sci-fi and horror, but his filmography attests to his genre-defying acting abilities.

Even though he has only appeared in 11 feature films so far, Yeun has earned praise for his work on films like the South Korean drama Burning and the black comedy Sorry to Bother You. Yeun is receiving a new wave of much-deserved praise for his latest film, Minari. At 37 years old, Yeun is clearly just getting started.

Joe Lynch’s unique office horror flick Mayhem is fueled by Yeun’s brilliant performance as Derek Cho, the film’s narrator and protagonist. Cho and his client Melanie (Samara Weaving) watch on from Derek’s law firm as the world is overrun by a virus known as ID-7.

This isn’t a lethal virus; instead, it infects neurological functions, leaving its victims lacking all inhibitions or sense of morality. Cho and Melanie are forced to defend themselves as everything around them descends into chaos.

9 Sorry To Bother You (2018): 6.9

In Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You, Yeun plays Squeeze, one of Cash’s coworkers at RegalView, a telemarketing firm. Cash, played by LaKeith Stanfield, is recruited by Squeeze to join a union at the company, one intent upon demanding better wages and rights for employees.

Sorry to Bother You proved to be a smash hit when it was reviewed, blending dark comedy and social commentary flawlessly. The film also stars Tessa Thompson, Jermaine Fowler, Danny Glover, and Terry Crews.

8 Okja (2017): 7.3

Yeun makes an appearance in Bong Joon-ho’s ensemble, international sci-fi epic Okja. The Netflix original film tells the story of a Korean girl named Mija, played by Ahn Seo-hyun, who saves a genetically engineered super pig named Okja from the evil corporation that bred her.

Yeun plays an animal rights activist and Animal Liberation Front (ALF) member named K who translates for Mija. He works closely with Paul Dano’s character J, the ALF leader.

7 Tuca & Bertie (2019): 7.4

I Origins is an underrated indie sci-fi film written and directed by Mike Cahill. While studying the evolution of the human eye, a molecular biologist named Ian Gray (Michael Pitt) makes a startling discovery that has the potential to change the course of scientific history.

In the film, Yeun plays Kenny, Grey’s lab partner, who later goes on to establish his own private research company. Britt Marling co-stars as Ian’s lab assistant Karen.

5 Burning (2018): 7.5

Directed by acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong, Burning is a steady, paced thriller about three young South Koreans who cross paths under intriguing circumstances. Aspiring novelist Lee Jong-su (Yoo Ah-in) runs into an old school friend named Shin Hae-mi (Jeon Jong-seo), who asks Lee to watch her cat for her while she goes on a trip to Africa.

Shin returns home with Yeun’s character Ben, whom she connected with during her adventures. Lee is suspicious of Ben from the start, and his suspicions bubble over into a startling and violent conclusion.

4 Minari (2020): 7.7

Yeun has been receiving awards-season buzz for his performance in Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari, a period drama about a South Korean immigrant family acclimating to life in 1980s America. Yeun plays father Jacob Yi, and Han Ye-ri co-stars as his wife Monica.

The Yi family embark on a journey from California to rural Arkansas, where they purchase a plot of land Jacob hopes to develop into a successful farm. This beautiful film unfolds from the perspective of the Yis’ young son David.

3 Voltron: Legendary Defender (2016 – 2018): 8.1

A reboot of the Voltron franchise and the Japanese anime series Beast King GoLion, Voltron: Legendary Defender combines classic anime styles with CGI action sequences. The show centers around the Paladins of Voltron, who band together to construct the massive titular robot they hope will defeat the evil Galra Empire.

Yeun voices Keith, the Paladin pilot of the Red Lion. A co-production between the United States and South Korea, all eight seasons of Legendary Defender are streaming on Netflix.

2 Final Space (2018 – Present): 8.3

Final Space is a beloved space opera that first aired on TBS before it transitioned to Adult Swim. A former prisoner named Gary Godspeed and his alien pal Mooncake travel around the universe in search of its answers, questing toward the furthest outreaches of space.

In the series, whose third season will premiere later in 2021, Yeun breathes life in a host of characters. These include Little Cato, Meat Street Vendor, Infinity Guard Captain, Helper Assistant, Death Cookies, and Mr. Graven, among others.

1 Tales Of Arcadia (2016 – 2018): 8.5 – 7.8

Yeun voices the same character, Steve Palchuk, in each iteration of Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix CGI-animated series Tales of Arcadia. Billed as a sci-fi fantasy adventure, Tales of Arcadia centers around the town of Arcadia Oaks, which harbors a crazy secret: it’s home to various supernatural events, as well as to the heroes who must defend themselves against evil forces lurking in the shadows.

Steve Palchuk is a bully-turned-champion who starts to assist the show’s protagonist Jim. After Trollhunters and 3Below, the planned trilogy will end with the forthcoming Wizards, followed by the feature-length film Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.
