Storm is Becoming The XMens Most Powerful Mutant

This article contains spoilers for Planet-Size X-Men #1.

The X-Men’s Storm may be becoming the most powerful mutant of all – both politically and well as in terms of sheer raw power. Ororo Munroe has always been considered one of the most powerful mutants of all, and Marvel finally classified her as Omega level back in 2019. An Omega is “a mutant whose dominant power is deemed to register — or reach — an undefinable upper limit of that power’s specific classification,” meaning Storm is one of the rarest types of mutants.

With the mutant race gathered on the living island of Krakoa, one could really expect Storm to be in her element. But, for all she’s done as a member of the ruling Quiet Council, Storm has pretty much kept her head down. Fortunately, X-Men head writer Jonathan Hickman confirmed Storm was taking center stage in the next phase of comics – and the scope of it all is finally revealed in Planet-Size X-Men #1, by Gerry Duggan and Pepe Larraz. This sees the mutants of Krakoa reveal the true scale of their ambitions to the rest of the world.

The mutants colonize Mars, with their Omegas – including Storm – terraforming the entire planet. Even more incredibly, the X-Men declare themselves rulers of the Solar System, appointing one of their own as “Regent.” Although Planet-Size X-Men #1 is silent as to the identity of who exactly this regent will be, it’s safe to assume it’s Storm, given she’s already known to be moving on from her position with the Marauders to something far grander in scope. That means Storm may become the highest-ranking mutant of them all – but she may come to regret this position.

Humanity is unlikely to take well to mutantkind’s spontaneously terraforming an entire planet and claiming it as their own, still less for Storm being appointed Regent over the entire Solar System. That means Storm can expect some serious pushback, while anti-mutant forces such as ORCHIS are sure to see their numbers swell. Making matters worse, ORCHIS has successfully constructed Nimrod, the ultimate Sentinel – and in every other timeline where Nimrod was created, the mutant race wound up extinct. The X-Men may well have overreached, and if so, the consequences will fall on Storm’s shoulders.

Still, this certainly means fans of Storm can expect the weather goddess to be key to the future of the X-Men franchise. The woman who protected Kenya and became Queen of Wakanda is now Regent of the entire Solar System, although it remains to be seen whether all her subjects will accept her reign.
