Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origins NewGen Upgrades Are Free

Square Enix has confirmed Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin will offer PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades for those purchase the game on PS4 or Xbox One. It’s not entirely surprising to learn this is the case for Xbox systems, but recent actions by Sony have called future PlayStation 5 game upgrades into question.

Microsoft was clear about cross-gen support for Xbox consoles ahead of the Series X/S launch in 2020, and its Smart Delivery service ensures buying one version of the game allows customers to play it on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. This means players who still can’t get their hands on an Xbox Series X can buy games for Xbox One and eventually play them on Series X when they do upgrade. On the side of the console aisle, Sony recently revealed that future first-party PlayStation 5 upgrades will charge ten dollars, a move that has been widely criticized by fans and pundits alike. This approach seems especially unpopular in the face of PlayStation’s competition offering first-party upgrades (as well as many third-party ones) for free.

Luckily, all players who want to kill Chaos in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin won’t have to fear paying extra money for new-gen console upgrades. Square Enix’s TGS 2021 showcase announced a second demo is now available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, as well as revealing Stranger of Paradise’s release date as March 18, 2022. In a separate press release, the publisher also clarified the game will offer free PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades for those who first purchase it on PS4 or Xbox One.

This isn’t the first time Square Enix has offered a free new-gen upgrade for one of its titles, as Marvel’s Avengers also has a free upgrade option. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade also had a free upgrade option for those who originally purchased FF7 Remake on PS4, charging for the FF7R INTERmission DLC content separately.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have had a flying start, but it seems clear publishers won’t be abandoning the PS4 and Xbox One – or their massive playerbases – just yet. It’s likely that a lot of games will be cross-gen releases for the foreseeable future, and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is no exception. It just remains to be seen how long developers will be offering free upgrades for their games, especially when one of the big console manufacturers is charging extra for PS5 upgrades without public justification.
