On the Netflix hit Stranger Things, Joe Keery has played the role of Steve Harrington since the show premiered in 2016. Steve has undergone significant growth in the three seasons to date, from his beginnings as a supporting character and simply Nancy’s boyfriend to being one of the most popular and beloved components of Stranger Things in his own right.

10 He Has Been Suggested As The Father Of A Character From Another Hit Show

Shortly after the premiere of Stranger Things, fans were quick to notice Steve Harrington’s (aka Joe Keery’s) resemblance to actor Ben Schwartz from Parks and Recreation. Schwartz, for those unaware, played the role of Jean-Ralphio Saperstein on the hit comedy between 2010 and 2015.

Stranger Things takes place in the 1980s and Parks and Recreation took place in the present day. With this in mind, it has been suggested that Steve is somehow Jean-Ralphio’s father.

9 He Was A Classic 80s Bad Boy Villain

While it’s hard to believe now, but Steve was, in fact, a supporting antagonist when the show started. He was a popular athlete who dated Nancy Wheeler while also bullying Jonathan Byers, a far cry from the person entering season four.

With his now-dated hairstyle, entitled popular personality and a posse of equally snobby friends, Steve fit the classic antagonist slot to a tee. He was also the ‘bad boy’ that a teenage girl (Nancy Wheeler) was dating and the antithesis to the character that the audience roots for — Jonathan Byers.

8 He Feuded With His Replacement … Of Sorts

Although Steve has not left the show, he has managed to be replaced in one area. Now no longer the resident bully, the show needed a new character to fill that void. Thus, Dacre Montgomery joined the cast as Billy Hargrove.

Interestingly, one of the main people targeted by Billy was none other than Steve himself. This was interesting in the sense that while it was a school-based power struggle on the show, it also mirrored real-life, with Billy displacing Steve as the antagonist.

7 Other Characters Influenced His Change … For The Better

From season two onwards, Steve becomes a nicer and more compassionate character than he had been in season one. In other instances, this could be seen as changing a character to suit the story. However, in this case, the growth is all there in the writing.

By the time that the second season premiered, Steve had been dating Nancy Wheeler. Her influence instead of his entitled friends was the first step. His surprise friendship with Dustin Henderson ultimately cemented Steve into the person he now is.

6 Steve And Dustin Didn’t Interact In Season One

While their friendship is now synonymous with the show, Steve and Dustin did not share the screen in any meaningful way until season two. Even then, their interaction was of necessity rather than choosing to spend time with one another. However, they quickly bonded and became close friends.

Part of the reason for this is due to Steve being involved in Nancy’s storyline rather than the search for Will during the first season. As such, the two characters were only together in larger group scenes and did not interact directly until the following year.

5 He’s Not Related To Any Of The Kids

Jonathan Byers and Nancy Wheeler are the two main characters who are closest in age to Steve. They also happen to each have a younger sibling – Will Byers and Mike Wheeler, respectively, in the main “Party”. Their involvement with their siblings is a major reason why they became part of the story.

Steve, on the other hand, is not related to any of the kids. Despite having a close friendship with Dustin and protecting the kids during season two, his status as Nancy’s former boyfriend introduced him to the world of Eleven, the Demogorgon and the Upside Down.

4 His Actor Is Close With Hopper’s IRL

On the show, Steve Harrington has not had much interaction with Police Chief Jim Hopper. The latter is usually involved in storylines with Joyce that do not involve Steve. As such, this is a combination that has not been explored in great detail.

In real life, it’s a much different story. The actors behind the characters, Joe Keery and David Harbour, are very close friends. Keery even accepted a dare to shave his head, should Harbour have won a Golden Globe in 2017.

3 He’s A Breakout Character

In shows or films, a breakout character is one who is envisioned as a supporting player in the story, only to emerge as being extremely popular or beloved. Some examples besides Steve are Stewie Griffin on Family Guy and Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother.

Steve’s change in personality helped him win the hearts of fans who may have hated his guts back in the first season. Based on his original appearances, he didn’t seem like a character who would be sticking around for very long. Now, it would be difficult to imagine the show without Steve.

2 He Was Jonathan’s Counterpoint

One of the main plot points of seasons one and two was that Steve and Jonathan Byers both wanted Nancy Wheeler’s affection. Although Steve was succeeding as the season progressed, Nancy and Jonathan seemed to bond through their shared experiences with one another. As well as competing for Nancy, the boys also contrast each other.

While they were both dark-haired and slim, the similarities stop there. Steve was as wealthy as Jonathan was poor. Steve’s arrogance matched Jonathan’s modesty. Steve was a popular jock and Jonathan was a quiet photography enthusiast.

1 He Moved On From Nancy

Steve’s main story arc for season one and part of season two was his relationship with Nancy Wheeler. Although they later broke up, part of Steve’s initial bonding with Dustin was their commiseration over lost love, with Max being the girl from Dustin’s perspective. Steve also had a final look at Nancy while dropping Dustin off for the school dance in the season two finale.

During season three, Steve finally moves on from Nancy. After working with Robin Buckley at Scoops Ahoy and later evading Russian soldiers with her, Dustin and Erica Sinclair, he develops a crush on her. While this does not work out for obvious reasons, it showed that Steve was ready to pursue other women.
