Stranger Things is home to many lovely and not so lovely ladies. Who would make the best and worst girlfriends in the series?

On the surface, the tiny Midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana, seems like the most boring cookie cutter suburb in the United States. However, buried beneath that veneer of normalcy is a town that is astoundingly… strange. The locale of Stranger Things draws in people of all sorts, and the odd events there tend to have a noticeable effect on the town’s residents.
The dating pool in Hawkins might not seem that deep, but there are obviously some options available, both good and bad. So with that in mind, which characters in Stranger Things would make the best girlfriends, and who would make the worst?
10 Best: Barb Holland
Although Nancy was more than a little harsh on Barb when she was being a bit of a buzzkill, outside of the confines of high school shenanigans Barb is actually a pretty ideal girlfriend.
She’s protective over her friends, she doesn’t care about being accepted by the cool kids, and she encourages people to be true to themselves instead of striving for the approval of others.
9 Worst: Suzie
Perhaps Suzie will show some improvement in the second season, but the introduction to her character wasn’t a great one. After Dustin hyping her up all season, Suzie finally enters the picture, and seems poised to save the day with her super essential information, Planck’s constant.
However, despite the fact that Dustin tells her that this information can literally save lives, she demands that he partake in a duet with her before forking over the number, a delay that does cost lives.
8 Best: Max Mayfield
Even though Mike was immediately put off by Max’s new presence in Hawkins, every other member of the party was immediately smitten with her, and it’s not hard to see why. She’s a skater, she’s amazing at video games, and she doesn’t take guff from anyone. She even got her terrifying bully of a stepbrother to back off, because she’s just that tough.
And given that she’s dumped Lucas half a dozen times already, it seems that she won’t accept less than the best of boyfriends either.
7 Worst: Carol Perkins
Carol is probably pretty lucky that she nailed down Tommy, because they seem like two twits in a pod. She is the consummate 80’s mean girl, and it’s clear that she and Tommy’s influence really made Steve act way more horribly than he would by his own choice.
Although she’s not a significant character in the series, it doesn’t seem like she has ever once displayed one positive personality trait.
6 Best: Nancy Wheeler
At first Nancy just seemed like a shy and bookish girl who saw an opportunity to date the cutest boy in school and went for it, but once her best friend went missing, she transformed into the hero of Hawkins.
Nancy’s willingness to fight for those that she loves and her bravery in the face of danger are extremely impressive, and clearly all of the boys who like her have noticed that.
5 Worst: Kali Prasad
Kali is definitely one of the most intimidating girls in Stranger Things. And while her abilities are astonishing, the way that she chooses to use them isn’t the greatest.
Her desire for revenge is absolutely understandable, but that kind of single-minded fury means that she probably wouldn’t make the best girlfriend. It seems unlikely that she even cares about being someone’s girlfriend.
4 Best: Robin Buckley
Robin Buckley seems to be a bit of a square peg in the town of Hawkins, but that says way more good things about her than bad.
She is a very sassy and funny girl who is extremely comfortable speaking her mind. She’s also incredibly intelligent, surprisingly brave, and a very reliable friend. Tammy Thompson doesn’t know what she’s missing.
3 Worst: Eleven
Eleven is an incredibly powerful superhuman girl who is willing to literally sacrifice her own life to save her friends or protect the world. There’s hardly anything to dislike about her. But the fact that she’s the coolest doesn’t mean that she makes a very good girlfriend.
She’s obviously obsessed with Mike, but honestly, she was just introduced into the real world like a year ago. She doesn’t even know how to socialize, let alone be anyone’s girlfriend.
2 Best: Joyce Byers
While Joyce was constantly written off and discounted in the first season of Stranger Things, it’s easy to see why she now has people like Bob Newby and Jim Hopper falling all over her.
She’s an incredibly loving mom, and she’s a complete badass. She also doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her and will follow her heart and instincts no matter what anyone else has to say, and god help whoever tries to stop her.
1 Worst: Karen Wheeler
Look, given what a useless shlub Ted Wheeler seems to be, it’s not that surprising that the incredibly foxy Mrs. Wheeler has a bit of a wandering eye.
But the fact that she let her eyes wander towards a teenage boy who is barely legal and is the same age as her daughter is gross, and the fact that she actually considered having an affair with him is even grosser.
