Stranger Things Fans are Focused On The Wrong Season 4 Trailer

Fans of the Netflix hit are abuzz about the latest trailer for Stranger Things season 4, but many have missed out on a second teaser for the series that may give away much more about the upcoming season’s plot. Debuting in 2016, Stranger Things soon became a massive word-of-mouth success for streaming service Netflix. Combining small-town coming-of-age dramedy with sci-fi horror, the series from Hidden directors the Duffer Brothers soon gained a massive following and critical acclaim, both of which have only grown over its three seasons.

As fans of the little-known Granite Flats can attest, Stranger Things was not Netflix’s first foray into genre-mashing small-town period pieces. The series has, however, become one of the platform’s biggest hits yet, and excitement for the upcoming fourth season has been steadily growing since the first trailer was released over a year ago. Recently, a second trailer for Stranger Things season 4 appeared online and sent fans worldwide into a frenzy of theorizing.

It is easy to see why fans were enraptured by the brief teaser, with the recent Stranger Things season 4 trailer “Eleven, are you listening?” racking up almost 10 million views in its first month online. The trailer hints that Kali’s Stranger Things story is not over and that Hawkins Lab will play a major role in season 4, both of which are exciting prospects for fans of the series. However, this trailer is not the glimpse that viewers of the series should be focusing on if they want a hint at where the story of Stranger Things season 4 is heading. The “HNL Control Room” trailer, released on YouTube a few hours earlier and still stalling under 1 million views, is more cryptic but potentially tells viewers far more about the upcoming season’s story, showing a breakout from Hawkins Lab that could contextualize the other, more-viewed teaser.

The “HNL Control Room” trailer depicts the toys belonging to Hawkins Lab test subjects scattered across the floor and covered in blood as CCTV feeds flicker on and off. The glitchy CCTV, along with the lack of a guard watching it, implies that the staff of the facility has been slaughtered en masse or at the very least violently incapacitated. This could prove that there will be a mass breakout from the still-functioning Hawkins Lab in season 4, and with this context, fans could surmise that the second teaser “Eleven, are you listening?” isn’t actually a flashback to Eleven’s time in Hawkins Lab. Instead, the teaser could be her having a premonition/vision of the impending breakout (while she and the Byers are far from being able to help, having moved away from Hawkins), thanks to her psychic powers.

With this context, the meaning of “Eleven, are you listening?” changes completely. Matthew Modine’s villainous Dr. Brenner may be talking to a new eleventh test subject while, unbeknownst to him, Eleven peers through their eyes into the facility. This could alert Eleven to the fact that Hawkins Lab is up and running, allowing her and the Byers to return to the town before it’s too late. Of course, the body breakout depicted in the “HNL Control Room” trailer proves that season 4 of Stranger Things will likely see Hawkins Lab destroyed for good one way or another, no matter what timeline the two trailers line up with.
