Stranger Things ORIGINAL Conspiracy Theorist Was Elevens Mom

Eleven’s mother in Stranger Things almost played an incredibly different role in the show. In the version of Stranger Things that made it to air, Terry’s character served as a link to Eleven’s mysterious past. But the original iteration of the show, entitled Montauk, cast the character of Terry in a very different role — as a conspiracy theorist. This change is likely linked to Eleven’s turn as a fan favorite on Stranger Things.

Terry Ives added to the mystery of the Netflix show. When investigating Will’s disappearance and the mysterious origin of Eleven’s nature, Joyce and Hopper find Terry. They learn that Joyce underwent psychological experiments when she was pregnant with Eleven. This is highly implied to be at least part of the cause for Eleven’s powers. Terry has been occasionally brought back when the show needed to deepen the mystery surrounding Eleven.

But as Gizmodo reports, the original pitch for the show saw Terry as a male conspiracy theorist, as opposed to Eleven’s mother. The description for Terry bore a striking resemblance to the character that would go on to become Murray Bauman, the former journalist turned conspiracy theorist who worked with multiple characters on Stranger Things to uncover the mysteries of Hawkins, Indiana. While it’s unclear why the character named Terry Ives was changed, this is a reflection of the major ways the show changed from conception to its debut on Netflix.

At this point in time, it’s common knowledge to Stranger Things fans that the show was originally intended to be a limited series. That means that when Matt and Ross Duffer submitted their original pitch for Stranger Things to Netflix, their character list and descriptions were already parsed down and fleshed out. Terry Ives was turned into Eleven’s mom, and that character was spun into a beautifully tragic element of Eleven’s history. There was simply no room for that conspiracy theorist, so the character was scratched. But Stranger Things skyrocketed to popularity once it debuted on Netflix in the summer of 2016 and the streaming platform decided they needed more of the 80’s-inspired sci-fi show. It only makes sense that the Duffer brothers dove back into the show bible for their original Montauk pitch in order to flesh out Stranger Things. That conspiracy theorist just happened to be one of the characters they resurrected.

It was a wise choice to weave that character into the thread of the show. Murray offered some comic relief and acted as a great catalyst for storylines between Joyce and Hopper and Jonathan and Nancy. Brett Gelman, the actor who portrayed Murray, was even bumped up to a series regular for Stranger Things Season 3 after his character was so well-received during season 2. Seasons 2 and 3 of Stranger Things would’ve been missing a key element if Murray wasn’t crafted from the bones of the original Terry Ives character. This situation is a fascinating look into the world of television production. Creating a show and keeping it going is an ever-changing process. Sometimes, the changes made by showrunners do not work. But in other situations, like the evolution of the Terry and Murray characters on Stranger Things, the changes are for the best.
