Stranger Things Season 3 Has A PostCredits Scene

Stranger Things season 3 ends with a post-credits scene for the first time in the show’s history. The Netflix series seemingly tied up loose ends with the eighth episode. But an extra scene following the credits leaves the door open for the future. It’s important that the whole season is viewed before watching the specific scene.

The return of the Mind Flayer in Stranger Things was confirmed well before season 3 even had a premiere date. There’s an obvious threat back in Hawkins but it’s not just the Mind Flayer setting its sights on Eleven. After various teases, Russians have made their way to the sleepy Indiana town and their presence might be more dangerous than first thought. The post-credits scene doubles down on that notion.

Despite the fact that the season closed out many of the major storylines, there are still plenty of unanswered inqueries or details that viewers will wonder about. The post-credits scene allows Stranger Things to explore a new side of the series’ biggest mysteries. It also raises a bunch of new questions. For those who watched the full season, here’s a deatiled explanation of the post-credits scene.

After the main events of Stranger Things season 3’s finale, “Chapter Eight: The Battle of Starcourt,” an extra scene switches back to Russia, specifically, an area identified as Kamchatka. It’s a facility deep into snow-covered mountains controlled by Soviets. In the scene, two Russian soldiers are deciding which cell to enter. When one tries to open the door, the other says, “no, not the American.” So, the pair take a Russian man from the next door. They drag him down a series of steps as he kicks and screams. They then lock him in a caged area before opening a trapdoor. A full-sized Demogorgon then emerges and gets ready to devour the prisoner as he yells in terror.

Assuming that this takes place in a similar timeframe as the Hawkins-set events of Stranger Things season 3, it would mean that the threat is far from over. The Russian scientists either opened their gate or transferred a Demogorgon from the Starcourt base (using one of the cages Erica spotted earlier). That it’s able to exist without a connection to the Mind Flayer through the Upside Down, however, suggests their experiments have developed considerably.

The other question that comes across from the credits scene is who the soldiers were referring to in the first cell. Which American do they have held hostage and how does this person relate to the events in Hawkins? Stranger Things hasn’t been officially renewed for a season 4 but it’s all but guaranteed. The post-credits undoubtedly leave the door open for another season… or should we say they left the gate open?
