Stranger Things Season 4 To Feature Big Hopper Backstory Reveal

David Harbour has revealed that Stranger Things season 4 will delve into the backstory of his beloved character, Hopper. The character was last seen at the end of season 3, where he was seemingly killed as he sacrificed himself. However, in the teaser for Stranger Things season 4, it was confirmed that Hopper was still alive, being held prisoner in Russia. This reveal quieted the debate over who was “the American” being held captive in the country.

Stranger Things premiered in 2016, where it quickly became a phenomenon and one of Netflix’s most popular programs. The story follows a group of young children who must confront terrifying supernatural forces as they invade their small, tranquil town. Assisting them is a local police officer named Hopper, played by Harbour, who first meets the group of children during his investigation into the disappearance of one of their friends, Will (Noah Schnapp). Hopper has become an integral character within the show, not only striking up a kinship with the group of boys, but with Will’s mother (Winona Ryder) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), a young girl with powerful supernatural abilities and a troubled past that he develops a father and daughter dynamic with.

Now, IndieWire has uncovered that Stranger Things Season 4 will provide the backstory for David Harbour’s character, Hopper. His appearance at Liverpool Comic Con in March has surfaced online, where he reveals the new season will dig deep into Hopper’s past. He stated, “So I know specifically that in Season 4 we will give you a big, huge reveal about Hopper’s backstory.” He goes on to say, “It’s one of the things that I’ve known since the first frame of the first shot, and we haven’t expressed it yet. And finally we’re gonna express it in a big way. It’s my favorite thing about him that you guys don’t know about him yet, but it has to do with these backstories of New York, Vietnam, and dad.”

Following the reveal that Hopper was still alive, fans have been speculating as to how he will escape the Russian prison he’s currently trapped in. One theory has suggested that Winona Ryder’s character Joyce goes to Russia to rescue Hopper. Another theory makes the case that the Demogorgon is the key to Hopper’s prison escape. The well-known, highly dangerous creature was revealed to be held in the Russian prison during the mid-credits scene of the Stranger Things season 3 finale. Filming had begun for Stranger Things season 4, but production was delayed due to coronavirus concerns.

Hopper has not only been one of the most significant characters on the show, but one of the most likable and endearing as well. The more his character has encountered all things supernatural, the more he’s been able to evolve and progress as a key player. Though his character became a bit repetitive and grating in season 3, Harbour still managed to shine a light on the man’s best qualities, especially leading up to his heartbreaking sacrifice. The prospect of learning about his past is exciting to say the least since his character has always been one of the more underdeveloped in the series. However, fans will have to remain patient as they continue to wait for Stranger Things season 4 and Hopper’s backstory.
