Stranger Things Season 4 Trailer Breakdown 11 Story Reveals & Secrets

Here’s everything we learned from the brand new teaser for Stranger Things season 4. The road from Stranger Things season 3 to season 4 has contained more surprises than a shady laboratory in rural Midwest America. After an extended gap between its second and third runs, Stranger Things began filming for season 4 in February 2020, before COVID-19 quickly shut things down. The pandemic alone isn’t responsible for the lengthy delay, however, as the Duffer brothers are going bigger and more ambitious than ever before with Stranger Things season 4.

Previous teasers offered precious little in the way of plot info. A ticking grandfather clock in the Upside Down kicked-off the anticipation, before David Harbour’s Hopper was revealed alive and well(ish) in a Russian jail, toiling away in the snow. The most recent promo (released back in May) showed Dr. Brenner’s other MKUltra test subjects, and hinted toward more of Eleven’s enigmatic backstory. Brenner himself (played by Matthew Modine) is confirmed to return, and various cast members have warned fans of a darker tone for the coming season.

The latest “sneak peek” has now arrived, confirming Stranger Things season 4’s release date is… some time in 2022. Fortunately, the teaser also provides an early glimpse at the main cast alongside a smattering of brand new shots to get fans excited for the coming run. These are all the secrets and details we found in the new Stranger Things season 4 footage.

The Grandfather Clock Returns

After a procession of footage from previous seasons (including the “it is almost here” line, which can be found in the opening minutes of the very first episode), the Stranger Things season 4 trailer finally moves on to footage from season 4. The first shot depicts a gothic, ridiculously creepy grandfather clock, which was previously seen in Netflix’s brief Stranger Things season 4 announcement video in the Upside Down. The same clock has been present in other promo materials, and clocks also featured prominently in the previous “Eleven” trailer set in Dr. Brenner’s lab, so Stranger Things is seriously hammering home the theme of time. Is the grandfather clock a gateway to the Upside Down, or an indication of time travel for the coming season?

Eleven Gets Captured (Again)

The next shot features Joyce Byers Eleven looking considerably older than before and sporting a brand new hairstyle, likely inspired by her new adopted mother. A shocked Eleven is being held back by official government-looking types, strongly hinting that the authorities have caught up with their missing prized test subject. Oddly, these two goons aren’t the focus of Eleven’s attention, and she’s clearly troubled by something ahead of her. Could this be the moment Eleven is reunited with Dr. Brenner, and the suits are merely his security detail, sent to avoid a repeat of the Hawkins lab disaster?

Enter The Creepy Mansion

Stranger Things Season 4 Trailer Breakdown 11 Story Reveals & Secrets

A major chunk of season 4’s new trailer involves the Stranger Things gang stepping into a derelict and abandoned mansion in true Ghostbusters style. Given the interior decor (or lack of it), this could be where the aforementioned grandfather clock is housed, and our heroes could actually be hunting for the mysterious timepiece. In any case, it’s a stunning shot featuring a silhouette of Natalia Dyer’s Nancy Wheeler.

(Some Of) The Gang Return

Presumably part of the same sequence, we then see the bunch of house invaders from before looking up at something, possibly the grandfather clock. Though it’s not clear what they’re hunting for, the team itself is a curious collection. There are older versions of Steve, Dustin, Robin, Max, Nancy and Lucas, but Will, Jonathan and Eleven are conspicuous by their absence. This proves that the split from Stranger Things’ season 3 finale when the Byers moved away won’t be resolve right off the bat. And where’s Mike? Probably filming Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Hopper Gets A Flamethrower (!)

The double-act Stranger Things fans never knew they needed – Jim Hopper with a flamethrower. This exciting shot could comprise part of Hopper’s daring escape from the Russian prison camp seen in season 4’s previous trailer. David Harbour has commandeered the weapon (and some daring 1980s threads too) and seems to be hoping he can burn his way out of trouble.

Chrissy & The Cheerleaders

Stranger Things might be going “bigger” for season 4, but there’s still plenty of time for everyday school hi-jinks. This fleeting image reveals a cheerleader rally for the Hawkins Tigers basketball team but, more importantly, introduces new character Chrissy (center), played by Grace Van Dien, described as the most popular girl in school, but harboring a dark secret. The cheerleader sequence also sets up the arrival of another newbie – Myles Truitt’s Patrick. He’s apparently a basketball star who becomes embroiled in the crazy supernatural shenanigans that Hawkins just can’t seem to escape.

The Burning Car

Aside from the mystery of how this unfortunate driver managed to flip their vehicle on an empty, straight road, fans must also decode who the shadowy figure with their back to camera might be. Possible contenders include Mike and Will (maybe even Eleven), but the dark outline alone isn’t enough to say for sure. We have no idea what’s going on here, but the image of someone watching a burning car and doing nothing to help fits with the alleged darker tone for Stranger Things season 4.

Steve Underwater

As if getting dumped, beaten up, chased by Russians, and embarrassed in a bathroom stall wasn’t enough, poor Steve Harrington has been sent searching for something underwater in Stranger Things season 4. With the haunted house, the grandfather clock, and now the underwater hunt, Stranger Things looks to be recapturing that sense of Goonies-style adventure from season 1.

Always Time For D&D

The kids may be getting older, and the threats might be getting bigger, but Stranger Things season 4 still finds time for a Dungeons & Dragons (or similar tabletop game) session. Though we can’t see who’s playing, the gang’s role-playing usually correlates to the wider happenings in Hawkins, as seen previously with the Demogorgon and Mind-Flayer. Which fantasy lore will inform the monsters and mysteries of season 4?

Eleven’s Past

Stranger Things Season 4 Trailer Breakdown 11 Story Reveals & Secrets

Stranger Things season 4’s “Eleven” trailer strongly suggested that more revelations about Millie Bobby Brown’s character were incoming, with more insight into her time under Dr. Brenner’s tutelage at the Hawkins lab. This teaser shot continues that theme, proving Eleven’s past will be pivotal to Stranger Things’ future. Most likely a flashback or dream sequence, it’s particularly interesting that the camera is positioned inside a cell with Eleven looking in. Could season 4’s lab scenes be told from another child’s perspective, with the mystery character remembering their time being experimented on, and the other kids who were present – Eleven included?

Some have theorized that these Brenner’s lab images aren’t flashbacks at all, and actually represent a new series of cruel experiments taking place in the present day, which would certainly fit with the earlier shot of Eleven being apprehended by men in dark suits.

A New Team

The sight of four kids cycling down a long road is a familiar one to Stranger Things fans, but not necessarily with these four youngsters. From left to right, the biking quartet appear to be Max, Dustin, Lucas and Erica, confirming that Lucas’ sharp-witted younger sister will become a proper member of the Stranger Things crew in season 4.
