Conventions and events have begun to open back up this year, and people have been taking full advantage of the opportunity to socialize in real life again. While TwitchCon won’t occur in person until 2022, the Twitch Rivals competition has over 100 events scheduled to take place this year. And though it may be safer to be around other people now that there’s a COVID-19 vaccine, other dangers still exist, as Twitch streamer Maya found out this past weekend.

Twitch Rivals is a competition where popular streamers face off in some of the biggest games on the platform. These events take place all over the world, and the Ultimate Challenge was held in Las Vegas on November 4 and 5. The competition consisted of 16 teams of two streamers each going head-to-head in IRL events like mini golf and an obstacle course, as well as digital games. Maya, who usually does IRL streams on Twitch, partnered with QTCinderella, and the duo finished in 5th place in the competition.

After returning from the Twitch Rivals event in Las Vegas, Maya did a “just chatting” stream during which she revealed that she believed somebody had roofied her one night. “Some weird sh*t happened, but it wasn’t alcohol things.” She went on to explain that she had been roofied once in college and therefore recognized the signs and odd sensations that can result from being roofied. One phenomenon that Maya brought up repeatedly was the feeling that time was skipping, meaning she was awake the whole time, but simultaneously there would be moments that felt as if they were on fast forward and of which she had no memory. Maya summed up the story by saying, “It’s not a problem because I know nothing bad happened because I was with QT and Myth.”

Later during the stream, which was not clipped, Maya also mentioned that there was a guy who had been giving her a weird vibe that night. He had asked if he could give her a ride home, and this made Maya uncomfortable. So she asked fellow Twitch streamer Myth to keep the strange man away from her. Later, when she passed out in the bathroom, the guy kept asking where she was. This doesn’t necessarily mean that this unknown person was the one who possibly put a roofie in her drink, but it does raise alarm bells. Fortunately, nothing regrettable happened to Maya that night; unfortunately, whoever roofied her got away with it and may do it again to a girl who doesn’t have friends looking out for her.

This isn’t the first time a streamer has reported being roofied while attending a Twitch event. In September 2019, during TwitchCon in San Diego, streamer KTLODO tweeted that she was roofied during the convention. KTLODO got a blood test and the toxin report confirmed that she had traces of benzodiazepines in her system, a group of psychoactive drugs that lower brain activity. Rohypnol, the brand name drug colloquially known as roofies, is a benzodiazepine, but others in this class of medications are actually more frequently used than Rohypnol as tranquilizers for nefarious purposes. Hopefully, no other Twitch streamers need to deal with issues like this.
