Capcom has unveiled the latest and final Street Fighter V DLC character, Luke, in a new trailer. Street Fighter 5 has been receiving a steady stream of additional content from Capcom since the game first launched all the way back in 2016. The prestige and popularity of its namesake has kept Street Fighter 5 near the center of the fighting game community, and even now, it continues to be Capcom’s flagship competitive title.
In fact, Street Fighter 5 is the only one of Capcom’s modern fighting games that the company has supported in the long term. After the widely unpopular Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, Capcom has stuck to re-releases and compilations of its older classics in the fighting game genre. The long-in-development Tekken X Street Fighter is on hold for the foreseeable future as well, although some rumors claim it was actually cancelled long ago. Nonetheless, Capcom has kept Street Fighter 5 alive for half-a-decade, and it seems the game will still be getting new content throughout the remainder of 2021.
In a trailer posted to the official Street Fighter YouTube channel, Capcom revealed a brand new playable character joining the roster of Street Fighter 5. Luke is a never-before-seen fighter making his debut as the final Season Pass 5 character, and he has an unconventional kickboxing moveset. With projectile punches, target combos, and a few moves that resemble fellow fighter Alex, Luke looks like a stand-out boxing character in Street Fighter 5. The video description states that he will be coming to the game in late November, but a specific release date has not been given yet.
Luke will be the final DLC character for Street Fighter 5, rounding out Season Pass 5 and bringing the total number of playable fighters to 46. Whether or not Street Fighter 5 will be getting more cosmetic content in the future remains to be seen, but Capcom appears to be winding the game down as 2022 approaches. After the company suffered a massive data breach near the end of 2020, leaked documents confirmed that Street Fighter 6 is in development along with other unannounced titles. According to that leaked information, Street Fighter 6 will be available on current-generation consoles as well as last-gen ones, implying that the game will come out in the relatively near future.
This final character marks the end of a long road for Street Fighter 5, and many fighting game players are now looking ahead. While the game’s staying power is hard to deny, the community has voiced plenty of complaints about the game over the years, many of which have gone largely unaddressed. With Guilty Gear Strive currently holding the attention of the fighting game community, Capcom may need a whole new competitive game to put itself back in the spotlight.
